 1.0 Executive Summary

Air quality management has undergone a long history in UK. This report mainly focuses on two areas’ air quality management---the City of Glasgow and the Grangemouth petrochemical industrial and Irvine pharmaceutical complexes. The City of Glasgow is the third largest city in UK, and because of its dense transportation network and other pollution sources, the City of Glasgow is also the worst polluted city in Scotland. As for the Grangemouth petrochemical industrial and Irvine pharmaceutical complexes which contains several petrochemical factories and refineries, air has been badly polluted because of pollutants released in different emission sources.

Pollutants in the City of Glasgow and Grangemouth petrochemical Industrial and Irvine pharmaceutical complexes are typical and representative. Main pollutants in the City of Glasgow include Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Particles or particulate matter (PM), etc.. While in the Grangemouth petrochemical Industrial and Irvine pharmaceutical complexes, owing to their special materials---crude oil, natural gas, etc., besides those common pollutants, there are still other chemical pollutants like VOC (volatile organic compounds), hydrocarbons and chemical used or produced (benzene, 1, 3-butadiene, naphthalene).

Because of the serious air pollution in the City of Glasgow and the Grangemouth petrochemical industrial and Irvine pharmaceutical complexes, local authorities take different actions to improve these areas’ air condition. Setting Air quality management areas (AQMA) and air quality objectives, monitoring the air quality in air quality management areas are all effective methods in air quality management.
