      Chapter 1 Introduction引言

  1.1 Background of the research研究背景
语言学习的四项基本技能的听,说,读,写。在这四个技能中,写作被认为是最令人沮丧和困难的。特别是对非英语专业学生,他们感到很沮丧了大学英语考试的写作。对于一件事,写作大学英语测试是非常重要的,因为它占的总得分的15%The four basic skills for a language study are listening, speaking, reading andwriting. Among the four skills, writing is considered as the most frustrating and difficultone. Especially, for non-English majors, they feel very frustrated with the writing inCollege English Test. For one thing, writing is of great importance in College EnglishTest as it accounts for 15% of the total scores. For another, students fail to find aneffective way to improve their writing though they have learned English for at least 6years. In addition,a great many problems have emerged in non-English majors’ writing.Firstly, a lot of grammatical mistakes can still be found in their writing, though theyhave learned the grammar in middle school. For example, students always fail to add"s" after the third person singular verb. Secondly, students' writing lacks coherence andcohesion. For example, a majority of writing in College English Test is argumentativestyle. Students fail to organize their ideas in a coherent way like firstly....secondly...finally... Instead, they may state their ideas just in one paragraph withoutany coherent words. Finally, students are not able to apply the words they haveremembered into writing, or students use the words in an inappropriate way. Studentsindeed spend a great deal of time and energy in memorizing the vocabulary, however, intheir writing, either they use the words incorrectly or they don't know how to use them.According to many scholars" research,https://www.51lunwen.org/guidelines/ the learning of lexical chunks is aneffective way of solving the above problems‘ Lexical chunks, as multiword units, reflectthe relationship of the semantic meaning, grammatical structure and pragmatic function. Thus, instead of structuring the sentences by one word after another, they can extract astring of words simultaneously without considering their internal structures. In this way, students can not only reduce the possibility of making grammatical mistakes in theirwriting, but also spare more time to consider the coherence or content of the writing.Meanwhile, instead of memorizing the words mechanically, students can memorizelexical chunks in a meaningful way as every lexical chunk expresses a certain function.Nattinger and DeCarrico (1992) carry out the application of lexical chunks into threedifferent kinds of written discourses, such as a formal essay, a personal letter, and abusiness letter. They view that it is our competence in using lexical chunks that helps usto achieve fluent expressions. On the one hand, lexical chunks have the advantage ofmore efficient retrieval. On the other hand, they have the advantage of allowing learnersto direct their attention to larger structures, instead of keeping it narrowly concentratedon individual words when sentences are produced. Wood (2002) views lexical chunksare the basis of fluent language production, because they permit language production tooccur without the controlled processing and the limits of short-term memory capacity.Meanwhile, he points out that in spontaneous communication, adults usually use lexicalchunks as a production &论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
