Summary

Introduction

Water as a commodity has assumed strategic significance over a period of time. For states striving hard to maintain consistent levels of development like in the case of India and solvency as a nation state as in the case of Pakistan, any idea of loss of this critical entity is leading to increased stresses on nascent and historical water sharing agreement. Given the already tenuous relationship between the two nuclear tipped neighbours, the very idea of its historical enemy India manipulating its natural right and the resultant economic strangulation has overnight become one of the supposed ‘red lines’ which if crossed will lead to retaliatory nuclear strike.
