LED backlighting moves on from feasibility studies to LCD TVmass production.留学生论文网OSRAM Opto Semiconductors’ latest ThinFilmand ThinGaN® chip platform using the high power GoldenDRAGON® ARGUS® LED enables the next step. The uniqueARGUS® light mixing optics has been designed to offer excellentuniformity and efficiency levels. Flexible designs will fulfillcustomer wishes. First option implements competitive RGBsolutions compared to existing RGGB or RRGGB approaches.135 LEDs already fulfill the requirements for 32” backlights. Byusing a low number of devices best cost potential can be ensuredto OSRAM’s customers. Additional benefits coming with lowestfield failure rates and reduction of driver complexity. On the otherhand a 32” arrangement using 200 LEDs offers the best in classpower consumption of 105W.

1. Introduction
The market for consumer electronics, wireless applications andautomotive systems is searching for an enhanced technology forflat panel displays of all sizes from small LCDs to televisions.Since the deficiencies of cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL)technology for use in backlighting systems are evident, lightemitting diodes (LED) are expected to be the leading technologywithin a short time. The driving force behind this market trendwill especially be the large growth in LCD displays for televisionand increasing demand for thin high-brightness displays with arich color gamut, in all sizes for all applications.OSRAM OS specially offers a wide range of SMT LED types,which cover all available LCD sizes in the market. Within thisproceeding the focus will be on large area LCDs with direct LEDbacklighting from 24” to 82”. To fulfill brightness and power consumptionrequirements the high power package GoldenDRAGON® ARGUS® is the preferable solution. This SMT LEDhas been especially developed for uniform illumination of largeareas and represents an ideal product for direct backlighting oflarge LCD TV screens or advertising displays.Market penetration will depend on the rate with which costs arereduced. This in turn will partially depend on rapid increases inproduction volumes and continuous developments in LED andbacklighting technology.For a given LCD panel it is possible to have different backlightswith different focus: When the backlight design is mainly costdriven, one wants to reduce the number of LEDs to a minimum,when a backlight is demanded with a lower power consumption,one is willing to spend a few more LEDs, in order to increase theefficiency. Both approaches will be discussed and comparedbelow. These concepts can be applied to any size of LCD panel.
