1 Introduction

1.1 Research Background

1.1.1 The Importance of English Reading Teaching

In a rapidly developing economic environment,cultural exchanges betweenChina and other countries are becoming more and more frequent,and English,as thecommon language of international exchange,plays an important role in takingdomestic culture globally.In order to improve students’English reading level andreading ability,and to lay the foundation for the country to cultivate innovative talents,we need to pay attention to the skills of English reading(Shi,2021).In the long run,persistent reading can help learners effectively accumulate vocabulary,exercisestudents’thinking skills and improve their writing skills.As an important part oflanguage skills and one of the main components of language input,reading in Englishplays a crucial role in English language teaching.Reading is a written form oflanguage communication,a communicative process between the author and the reader,involving the author’s communicative intentions and the reader’s understanding,andis a cognitive-psychological process“from the surface to the inside.”In secondaryschool English teaching,reading teaching is an important part(Zhai,2013).Readingis a dynamic process of interaction between the reader and the writer since Englishreading often includes questions that infer the author’s intention,which is a test ofstudents’ability to grasp the theme and understand the central idea of the text.Moreover,these questions require students to be able to grasp the overall context ofthe text and to really understand the main body and central sentences.Students arerequired to be able to make good use of logical thinking methods such asgeneralization,judgement,induction and reasoning to analyse the content of a text inchapters and verses.

1.2 Significance of the Study

From the perspective of reading,mental effort,also known as pragmaticinference,how the reader achieves comprehension of a discourse,and is a necessaryprocess for the reader to understand the author’s intended pragmatic meaning through literal meaning.It is different from demonstrative logic,where the normal outcomesof argumentative logic are sometimes not tolerated by discursive reasoning(Wei,2004).To sum up,the process of changing teachers’thinking about teaching is alsothe process of changing students’learning habits.At this point,the learning of Englishreading knowledge is no longer an inertial receptive learning,but an activeexploratory learning.In this process,the teacher’s thinking and the content of thecourse are not static,but are adjusted in the process as the students’abilities improveand as the questions are answered.In this way,the teacher’s thinking is changed froma quantitative to a variable,which gives the teacher more choice in the content of thelesson(Liu,2016).Therefore,this paper applies the Relevance Theory into highschool English reading teaching,aiming to promote the formation of students’higher-order thinking skills,to gradually enhance students’critical thinking skills inreading.
