Chapter Two Task Description

2.1 Background of Translation

First, the author wants to introduce the book which is chose the original Englishelectronic book Don’t Believe A Word in Amazon.

Published in 2020, David Shariatmadari foresaw the day that came within 12months of his book – the panic hoarding of daily essentials – toilet paper, canned food, and prescription medicine – roused by the fear that they might suddenly be taken awayfrom us. His book examines the direction that language and our ability to communicate, clearly expresses people's misunderstandings about linguistics in real life, and explainsthem in an easy-to-understand way, which could relieve the pressure of learninglinguistics. At the same time, use a humorous way to convey the correct message to thereader.

The modern speaker or writer is lazy and imprecise, and yet hyped up toexaggeration, leading to the condition known as language obesity and spawning wordslike temper tantrums, live survivors, safe havens, new initiatives, and the all-time favorite– free gifts. Many things are tearing down our ability to communicate, and discussingwhat there are, Shariatmadari brings us back a little in time to see how languages formand are used across the world, and how dialects come from, and how they are subordinateto a superior main tongue. Throughout the book we find bits of fascinating information –that Mandarin is the most information dense language – but they all coagulate into awhole, to help us understand what language does for us, and what we are doing tolanguage. Shariatmadari invites us to chase the references in the book because they are atreasure trove.

2.2 Definition of Long and Complex Sentences

Song Tianxi (2000) believes that the sentence that usually possesses more than 20words is what we call the long sentence. However, translators should note that longEnglish sentences that have more than 20 words do not mean they are complex Englishsentences. For example, the sentence “I buy a pair of pants, a bunch of flowers, apples, peaches, bananas, a basket of oranges, tomatoes and potatoes, a pack of potato chips, aChinese-English dictionary and a magazine in the market” has 34 words, but its structureis so simple that it cannot be considered as a complex sentence.

Long and complex sentences in English refer to sentences with more than 25 words, which contain two or more clauses, infinitives, participles, prepositional phrases oradverb phrases (Liu, 2016). Sentences of this kind have the following characteristics:

Firstly, there are more juxtaposition in a sentence. In long and complex sentences, there are often many sentence elements such as parallel subject, predicate, attribute oradverbial, which makes the sentence structure complicated and makes it more difficult tounderstand the meaning of the sentence.

Secondly, there are many modifiers in sentences. The structure of English sentencesis mostly “headword + modifier”, and there are many modifiers in a sentence, which actas different components in the sentence.

Thirdly, there are many flexible clauses in long and com论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
