CHAPTER ONE  INTRODUCTION

1.1  Research orientation

With the deepening of globalization, the translation of laws and regulations also needs further standardization. The criminal law of the PRC is a comprehensive and systematic code that stipulates crimes and their legal consequences. It was promulgated in 1979 to protect the legal interests of the people, the state and the public. Therefore, a more accurate English version of the Criminal Law of the PRC can better protect the people, the state and the society. English is the most popular language in the world, and excellent English translations can also be used for the study and reference of people from other countries who are interested in Chinese laws. People from other countries can learn Chinese laws through their English versions. Therefore, this study selects the English version of the Criminal Law of the PRC from PKU Laws Corpus, which is popular among legal learners because the data in the corpus is vast, the classification is detailed, and it is updated constantly. And then the author evaluates the translation quality of its conditional sentences from the perspective of five principles of legal translation with the help of the corpus research method, as well as the descriptive and quantitative research methods.

From the perspective of five principles of legal translation provided by Li & Zhang (2006), the present study tries to investigate the translation quality of conditional sentences in an English translation of the Criminal Law of the PRC (Hereinafter referred to as the CL of the PRC). More specifically, it attempts 1) to examine the patterns in the translation of conditional sentences in the CL of the PRC; 2) to evaluate the translation quality of conditional sentences in the CL of the PRC. 

1.2  Rationale

Cultural exchanges are becoming more and more frequent nowadays due to the acceleration of China's internationalization process. Therefore, in order to follow the steps of internationalization, the translation of legal documents into English must be more standardized. 

First, criminal law is the law that prescribes crime and punishment, which is one of the most critical laws in China. International communication and population migration have become more and more frequent because of globalization. And many foreigners who live in China but do not know Chinese very well may be involved with the law. Besides, China, as the world's second-largest economy, has developed very quickly, so Chinese laws should be provided for the reference of the people around the world. Furthermore, English is a global language, which is widely used by the people around the world. The capability of using English is essential for international communication, trade exchanges, technological cooperation, etc. Therefore, it is also important to provide a good-quality English version of the CL of the PRC for legal communication.
