What – this project proposes to investigate the application of the virtual world Second Life for e-learning2.0 in higher education area, find out the benefits and deficiencies of the application.

Why – social networking environments such as Second Life are rapidly growing in popularity. But not too much people clear about these.

E-Learning 2.0 is the innovation thinking on the basis of traditional E-Learning. In the first decade, E-Learning (E-Learning 1.0) mainly concerned about the use of Internet technology to replace the existing face-to-face education. Traditional teaching is designed to allow people in accordance with the set to learn step by step, providing a series of interaction, experience, coursework and exercise test.


By contrast, E-Learning 2.0 is built around the concept called "cooperation". E-Learning 2.0 assumes that knowledge (or some of the skills) is the accumulation by all the people. It teaches learners through the interaction of content and practice. From its point of view, traditional E-Learning system just delivers the knowledge to the students based on Internet technologies. Students learning through reading and complete the assessments and teachers give a grade to the quality of the submission. But the new E-Learning more focus on the social learning and the use of social software than before, for example the virtual world Second Life.


Second Life (abbreviated as SL) is a virtual world based on Internet, which has been wildly reported by mainstream media in late 2006 and early 2007. People enter the game by download a Client developed by Linden Lab. The users, who called "residents" in the game, interact with each other through the movement of the virtual incarnation. Residents can go everywhere, meet other residents, socialize, participate in personal or group activities, manufacture and trade virtual properties and services.
