was obtain a general understanding of wine industry andinternational trade through online forum or documentaries. In the real practice, however, the topics of the speakers’ talk and negotiation ranged from daily life to very specializedfields, which was obviously beyond the reporter’s preparation.

2.1.1 Unfamiliarity with the wine industry

The first difficulty the reporter faced with was the limited exposure to the wine industryterminology and knowledge in the preparation stage, thus having trouble processing orunderstanding the source language (esp. technical terms) and converting it intoappropriate target language.

Although in the reporter’s preparation, she learned and memorized a list of wineterminology from the material files downloaded from the online forum, and even made aglossary that she carried with her, she still encountered some terms outside her wordbank. All these resulted in failed interpreting of information. Here is one example.

2.2 Ineffective processing of long sentences

The second type of difficulty that the reporter encountered was the ineffective processingof long sentences. By analyzing the transcript, the reporter noticed that she missed somepieces of information when it came to long sentences. Information omission was aserious problem in this project, which cast negative influences on the communicativeactivities.

Omission means that interpreters do not interpret some parts of the original texts. Itoccurs when interpreters fail to transfer the key information into the target language dueto the amount of information, structure, speed or memory load. (Gile, 2009)

The reporter developed a habit of taking notes during her interpreting training. However, in most cases during the project, it was not convenient for her to take notes, which posed a challenge to her, especially when dealing with long sentences. As a result, she left out some parts of the information that the speaker conveyed. The following willanalyze the problem with two examples.

Chapter Three Solutions

3.1 Making thorough preparation before the interpreting project

First, it is of great importance for interpreters to make thorough preparation. Due to theinstantaneity of interpretation, the interpreting task requires a higher degree of familiaritywith terminology and professional background than the written translation task. Inaddition, interpreters need to do plenty of research and have a good knowledge ofcognitive science in theory and practice (Gile, 2009, 2011:53).

Professional interpreters usually gain background information by researching, reading and memorizing materials related to the interpreting topic. One of the majordifferences between professional interpreters and non-professionals is whether they canflexibly use the information gained in the preparing stage, and apply it strategically to theinterpreting project 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
