1.1 Introduction to the source text

The text of the translation report is selected from The Western Mediterraneanand the world by Teofilo F. Ruiz in 2018. The Western Mediterranean and the Worldbelongs to the historical and cultural readings. It is one of The Blackwell history ofthe world series (published by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd ). This book introduces thewestern Mediterranean through all 10 chapters, mainly from two parts: geography,history and culture contest of the western Mediterranean, writer’s encounters in thewestern Mediterranean. There is no Chinese version of this book. Under the influenceof The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World in the Age of Philip ц, themonument of Fernand Braudel, Teofilo places the Mediterranean in a broadergeographical and chronological context and to discuss some questions about culture,language, and religion neglected by Braudel’s famous work. Since the book is ahistorical and cultural book, there are a large number of expressions about nature,history, geography, culture, and politics in the article, including many proper nouns,such as many place names.

In this excerpt, the translator introduces the second chapter of the book, whichmainly explores the geography and climatic characteristics of the westernMediterranean region. In this chapter, the author first introduces the geographicalscope of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding natural landscape. At the sametime, combining historical data, the author describes how the geographical location,ocean currents, and climate characteristics of the Mediterranean affect human activities.

Moving clockwise from Sicily to continental Italy, this chapter offers a summaryof our present knowledge about the geography and climate of the westernMediterranean region and the role of the environment on the historical developmentof the Mediterranean world.

Teofilo F. Ruiz is a Cuban-American medieval historian and professor at UCLA.In 2012, he was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama.He is consistently rated as one of the most popular professors at UCLA, and haspublished many books as well as dozens of articles in scholarly journals as well asreviews and smaller articles.

The Mediterranean region has always been one of the world's famous regions. Itsnatural landscape and historical stories have always attracted many people.
