Chapter One Task Description

1.1 Background of the Translation Task

The 18th National Congress of the CPC in 2012 explicitly proposed the consciousness ofa community with a shared future for mankind should be advocated and the legitimateconcerns of other countries should be taken into account in the pursuit of own nationalinterests. In an era of the changing international situation, people of allcountries should be aware of the importance of maintaining peace and fighting wars. Thebook German Boy is a documentary story happened in the background of the aftermath ofWWⅡ, one of the most significant global war in the history of humankind. In the story, it’sobvious that not only invaded countries but also aggressors are tortured by cruel war. Thus,translating German Boy, the memoir of Wolfgang W. E. Samuel, who went through the darkhistory after Nazi Germany collapsed when he was a German boy in the land of the aggressor,conforms to the willing to turning against wars, which is consistent with the construction of acommunity with a shared future for mankind.

1.2 Significance of the Translation Task

In the background of establishing a community with a shared future for mankind, the translator thinks the source text should be meaningful and inspire readers. After considering,the translator chooses German Boy as the source text. So, there are three reasons why thetranslator chooses German Boy as the source text.

First of all, German boy is of great research value. In contemporary domestic booksabout Germany in World War Ⅱ, most works take the German military history of WWⅡ as thetheme, covering the Nazi Germany air force, navy, armored division troops recording aboutweapons and tactics, etc., while only a very few are the memories and reflection of Germansoldiers and decrypting files during the Second World War to show wartime situation. Butfew domestic works of literature develop from the perspective of ordinary Germans, thoughtwo of the most famous are The Diary of Anne Frank and BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS.
