Chapter One Task Description

1.1 Introduction to the Source Text

In 2020,Textbook of Pediatric Neurosurgery,edited by Concezio Di Rocco,DachlingPang and James T.Rurka,was officially published.It is a Medical textbook,which records thenew progress and achievements in pediatric neurosurgery,aiming to provide comprehensiveguidance for the management of pediatric neurosurgery diseases and help to achieve goodnursing effect.This textbook provides detailed guidance for the diagnosis and treatment ofcongenital brain malformations,cerebrovascular diseases,head injury,spinal trauma andinfection,dysfunction,congenital,developmental spinal diseases,and many other diseases inPediatric Neurosurgery Department.

In September 2020,the translator accepted the entrustment from a translation companyto translate two sections-“Empyemas and Brain Abscesses”(Philipp,2020)and“Encephalitis”(Annie,2020)in the textbook from English to Chinese.In the process oftranslation,it is found that this book is helpful to popularize the relevant knowledge ofpediatric neurosurgery in China and could provide relevant references for the prevention,treatment and research of such diseases in China.It is also noted that medical articles,as abranch of scientific and technological texts,have distinct stylistic characteristics(Henry,1998).For example,the English medical articles have more passive voice and long difficultsentences,which increase the difficulty of understanding and translation to a certain extent.Intranslation of such articles,accuracy is the primary concern,but fluency shall be also ensured.

1.2 Significance of the Study

The significance of this study can be understood in the following three aspects.

Firstly,as is known to all,English is different from Chinese in many aspects,such as pronunciation,sentence structure and commonly used parts of speech.Due to the differencesbetween Chinese and English,especially the static tendency of English and dynamic tendencyof Chinese which can be regarded among the most significant differences between them,fluency cannot be easily achieved without some translation strategies.Ignorance on suchlanguage differences between English and Chinese will cause great trouble to the readers ofthis target text(such as doctors or R&D personnel).Therefore,this topic is selected,with anaim to investigate the verbalization strategy from the perspective of English and Chinesecomparison for the translation of medical texts from English to Chinese.When translating twosections(“Empyemas and Brain Abscesses”and“Encephalitis”)in the Textbook of PediatricNeurosurgery,the translator found that the source English text had more nouns andprepositions,while the target Chinese text had more verbs,with many verbalizationphenomena.Through the comparison between English and Chinese,the translator tried tounderstand the laws of the two languages and the differences between them,and applied suchcomparison to this translation practice to explore the verbalization strategy used in the processof E-C translation of medical texts.
