Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Translation Task

Nowadays, with the acceleration of globalization and social progress, exchanges between countries and regions around the world are becoming more and more frequent which is not only limited to the economic, cultural, and technological aspects, but also involves others of human life, such as public health and wellbeing. Since entering the technological era, smart phones have developed rapidly, and the relevant industries received a huge boost in sales. In the meanwhile, with the influence of smart phones, people are increasingly concerned about their health and wellness. The source text Wellness in the Age of the Smartphone was published by Global Wellness Institute in 2018. The intention of this paper is to fully appreciate and recognize the benefits of technology and ensure that readers would slow down enough to contemplate its holistic impact, both positive and negative, on human wellbeing. The translation task, based on this popular science paper, has been carried out since September, 2020. The purpose of the task is to precisely convey the original meaning of the source text for the Chinese readers. 

Studies on the translation of popular science text have gained remarkable achievements. As far as the current translation of popular science is concerned, there are many high-quality translations from translators with rigorous attitude to science. However, there have been also a large number of popular scientific translations that lack credence and qualification. Guo Jianzhong (2007) points out that there is a general misconception about the translation of popular science texts, that is, the content of popular science texts is simple and their language is plain, thus it is quite easy to translate them. In fact, if translators act hastily without careful consideration, they might misunderstand the original texts and therefore generate questionable interpretations of facts and laws, and even ungrammatical expressions. It can be seen that the translation quality of popular science texts needs improving urgently, and further in-depth research is also necessary, such as carrying out translation practice under the guidance of translation theories.

1.2 Significance of the Translation Task

Scientists have nationalities, but knowledge has no borders. First of all, Wellness in the Age of the Smartphone is a paper about the impact of technology on human wellbeing and the way forward. The source text provides readers with information on the limitations, potential risks, and current adverse effects of technology. The information in the paper not only enriches readers’ knowledge, but also widens their horizons and encourages them to think over the impact that the most ubiquitous innovations and technologies are having on human beings. Therefore, from a macro perspective, the translation of Wellness in the Age of the Smartphone and the report are helpful to introduce one of the excellent foreign popular science papers to China, and open a window for Chinese researchers, which may be conductive to the development of technology in the long run.
