摘要:本文是一篇初中英语教学论文,本文对195名大学生进行了问卷调查。研究发现,男女生在学习动机、学习态度、学习兴趣和学习策略上存在显著差异,这是导致英语学习性别差异的主要原因。为了进一步了解原因,作者所在学校对英语教师进行了访谈。


2.1 Definitions of Relevant Concepts

In this part, the definitions of gender, gender differences and genderdifferences in learning will be discussed.

2.1.1 Gender

Gender includes natural gender and social gender.

Natural gender, which refers to the differences between the internal body andappearance between male and female, is determined by the biologicalcharacteristics. It refers to the physiological differentiation, which is manifested inthe differences of physiological structure and function. The differences inphysiological structure include chromosomes, sex hormones, brain tissue andinternal and external genitals; the differences in physiological functions betweenmale and female include the differences in physical development process,physiological process and physical quality. Natural gender is innate and is a naturalphysiological marker (Chen Yan, 2009).

Social gender refers to the gender characteristics and differences betweenmale and female formed under the construction of social culture, that is, theunderstanding of the differences between male and female formed in socialculture, as well as the group characteristics and behavior patterns of men or women formed in social culture. Gender is a comprehensive reflection of thedivision of roles, social expectations and behavior norms between men andwomen formed by social culture, and is a set of normative expectations andbehaviors related to the biological gender of men and women obtained throughsocial learning. Gender is the core concept of contemporary women’s theory andthe central content of feminist scholarship, which is different from the“physiological gender”marked by human biological characteristics, refers to thesocial identity and expectations constructed in a social way. 2.2 Studies on Gender Differences in Language LearningAbroad and at Home

In this part, the author described the studies on gender differences inlanguage learning abroad and at home.

2.2.1 Study on Gender Differences in Language Learning Abroad

The gender difference is one of the important research contents ofdifferential psychology. In the middle of 19th century, German psychologistSteilen first proposed the concept of “differential psychology” in his bookDifferential Psychology. However, compared with other subjects, the research ofgender difference psychology is more complex, and the conclusions are oftencontradictory, so it is difficult to reach the same conclusion.

Since the 17th century, people began to pay attention to the differences between men and women in language acquisition and use. Since the 1920s,psychologists, sociologists and linguists have become interested in therelationship between gender differences and language learning. It can be said thatthe research on the relationship between gender and language learning is endless.

In 1974, American psychologists E.E.Maccoby and C.N.Jacklin studied thedifferences in memory, learning motivation, self-awareness, temperament andemotion between the boys and girls. After the publication of Psychology ofGender Difference, gender difference psychology came into being.
