In order to cultivate students’thinking quality in English reading class, teachers who play a leading role in class havepivotal positions in it. And if teachers want to play the role of a good trainer, theirunderstanding and attitude to it becomes crucial. So it’s no doubt necessarily to exploreteachers’ understanding of the cultivation of students’ thinking quality and their attitudestowards it.

4.1.1 Teachers’ Understanding of the Cultivation of Students’ ThinkingQuality

To explore teachers’ understanding of the cultivation of students’ thinking quality, theresults of items 1-4 in teachers’ questionnaire will be analyzed in this part. Item One is thequestion “Do you know some important contents of students’ thinking quality---one of theimportant components of students’ key competence?” Teachers were invited to choose theanswer that best suited their situation.

5.1 Major Findings

Based on the theory of cognitive development and discourse analysis, this thesisexplores the current situation, existing problems and influencing factors of the cultivationof students’ thinking quality in the English reading teaching at junior high schools andsome suggestions are advanced for teachers, students, junior high schools and the textbookwriters. In this thesis, 100 teachers and 500 students in Yuhang District of Hangzhou wereinvestigated by means of questionnaire survey, classroom observation and teacherinterview. This research mainly covers such aspects as the current situation, existingproblems, and influencing factors in the cultivation of students’ thinking quality. The majorfinding are as follows.

First of all, 98% of the English teachers in junior high schools know something orhave been very familiar with the cultivation of students’ thinking quality. Meanwhile, all ofthem hold quite positive attitude towards it. This provides a good premise for them tocultivate students’ thinking quality in English reading classes. With the popularity of keycompetence, more and more teachers pay more attention to the cultivation of students’thinking quality. They believe that thinking quality is of great benefit to the present andfuture development of students, They all think that it is feasible to cultivate thinkingquality in junior high period. What’s more, they believe it should be one of the teachinggoals to cultivate students’ thinking qualities, which can be seen in the teachers’ interviewsurvey. Compared with the linguistic knowledge and reading strategies, nearly 40% ofthem put more emphasis on thinking quality. Besides, teachers agree that the maincomponents of thinking quality are logical thinking, critical thinking and creative thinking,and all these qualities can be cultivated through English reading classes. There is no doubtthat most of the junior high school teachers have the consciousness of cultivating students’thinking quality.
