本文是一篇初中英语教学论文,笔者认为未来的调查可以将受试者分为不同的英语水平,并考察他们在主题聚类呈现下的词汇习得情况是否不同。除了不同英语水平的参与者外,学者们还可以比较不同认知风格(场依赖和场独立)的学习者的词汇习得效果,从而判断主题聚类更适合哪种类型的学生。

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION

1.1 Research Background

English Vocabulary is the basic element of English language and plays a significant role in English teaching and learning. One’s vocabulary size and knowledge will greatly affect his or her language communication ability. Wilkins (1972) once stated that without grammar, very little can be conveyed; but without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed. According to National English Curriculum Standard (2022), when students graduate from junior middle school, they are required to master 1600 English words. Therefore, it is crucial for junior middle school students to learn and accumulate English vocabulary. On the other hand, teachers are also supposed to attach importance to vocabulary teaching and help students to lay a solid foundation for their language ability development.

On vocabulary teaching and learning, the presentation mode of vocabulary increasingly attracts scholars’ attention nowadays. How to present a word is an important research topic. Ur (2000) introduced some ways of vocabulary presentation, such as concise definition, translation, detailed description, examples, demonstration (acting, mime), illustration (picture, object), synonyms and antonyms, context (story or sentence in which the vocabulary occurs), etc. And there are numerous studies which have examined presentation ways which can help students acquire vocabulary more efficiently. However, most of them just focused on how to present a single word with pictures or within contexts, and they did not pay much attention to the relationship between vocabulary. Tinkham (1997) proposed thematic clustering vocabulary presentation mode, which is based on the psychological relationship between vocabulary and all words have a common theme concept. Some researchers (Hoshino, 2010; Rahimi, 2014; Li, 2018) have started to investigate its effects on vocabulary teaching.

1.2 Research Purpose

Nowadays, reviewing English vocabulary is a tough task for both teachers and students. On the one hand, some teachers have no idea about how to conduct vocabulary review lessons effectively. They only ask students to read aloud all words and remember each word’s spelling. The review lessons are also filled with dictation and dull exercises like multiple choices, translation, etc. On the other hand, students find it difficult to review so many English words that the majority of them just memorizing words mechanically by reciting the vocabulary list. For them, vocabulary learning and review is painful, which in turn will diminish students’ interests and enthusiasm for vocabulary learning even for English learning. In view of the terrible situation, it is necessary to find an effective way for teachers and students to review English vocabulary. Besides, up till now, many studies have applied thematic clustering presentation mode to new vocabulary teaching in class but few researches have explored its effects on vocabulary reviewing.
