In discussing the research background, the author would like to firstly talk aboutChina‘s international status. Since entering the 21stcentury, China has hosted a lot ofinternational events and conferences which all attracted the whole world‘s attentionand thousands of people from overseas came to participate, such as Beijing OlympicGames in 2008, Shanghai World Expo in 2010 and Summer Youth Olympics whichwill be held in Nanjing in 2014. It‘s with the successful host of these events andconferences that China‘s status in the international community has achieved a brandnew level. And it is playing a more and more important role in the global development.Last year in 2012, in the annual NPC and CPPCC sessions, hundreds of journalistscoming from all over the world made broadcast and spread what was happening inChina to the world. This will account for the reason why the author chooses politicaltalks as the research object in this thesis, since the whole world is eager to knowChina better. And in this case, political talks serve as an easy access for them.With the increasing number of political talks given by government officials,interpreting has become more indispensable. Bridges need to be built to make peoplewho speak another language understand those political talks. As a result, interpretingbehaves just as the bridge. As James Nolan has put it ―Interpretation can be defined ina nutshell as conveying understanding. Its usefulness stems from the fact that aspeaker‘s meaning is best expressed in his or her native tongue but is best understoodin the language of the listeners.‖ (James Nolan, 2008:2) What‘s more, considering thespecific characteristics of seriousness and exactness in political talks, even tiny errorsare intolerable in the interpreting process. Mistakes made by interpreters may triggermisunderstandings to journalists and millions of audience in front of the TV. To someextent, it will even cause bad influence to the relationship between countries andaffect China‘s image in the international arena. Therefore, the author tends to probeinto the interpreting process in political talks. Lawrence Venuti once said ―Eventhough no one seems likely to deny that communication is the primary aim andfunction of translated text, today we are far from thinking that translating is a simplecommunicative act‖ and ―the foreign text, then, is not so much communicated asinscribed with domestic intelligibilities and interests.‖ (Lawrence Venuti, 2004: 482)A good interpreted version of political talks can definitely help build up an attractiveimage for the country and contribute more to its diplomatic work.Talking about the difficult parts in interpreting of political talks, culture-loadedexpressions must be taken into consideration. An overview of culture-loadedexpressions will be stated in the following chapters. Broadly speaking, they includethose proverbs, lines of poems, allusions, old sayings and words and sentences withspecial Chinese cultural and political elements. They usually contain high informationdensity and render great challenges for interpreters to find the equivalent expressionsin the target language. For example, the proverb ―化干戈为玉帛‖ was once said byPremier Wen Jiabao in his speech in a press conference, his purpose is to express hiswish of peace between countries.
