Scope of the Study
The experiment period begins from February 25 to May 31 2003. The experiment group takes two-hour course weekly, one hour for body activity and the other for nutrition education. The control group only takes one-hour course for body activity. Before the course begins, every participant should provide basic personal data, health check survey, personal disease history and sign an experiment agreement.
Importance of the Study
The research of Blair & Brodney(1999) reported that overweight people who engage in more body activities and have a better health-related fitness value show a lower disease incident rate or death rate, comparing to overweight people who engage in less body activities (sitting for a long time) and have a worse health-related fitness value. Elrick(1996) indicated that body fat value is an effective index for health-related fitness. Exceeding body fat value symptomatizes many diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes and cancers. The above-mentioned diseases and other factors may result in premature death. Extreme overweight also hinders the people from fair employment chance, university admittance and a superior social interaction.
Epstein & Goldfield(1999) indicated that doing exercise can increase energy consumption to achieve a negative energy balance, that means energy consumption >energy intake, so to reduce the body weight. Lan (1997) said that increasing age result in body fat increase. The main reason is that body activity and basic metabolic rate reduce as the age increases. To increase body activity can reduce body fat. Researchers found that exercise and diet control can effectively reduce the body weight. They hope to help students maintain ideal body weight with exercise and nutrition education.
Definition of Terms
1. Body Composition
Including Weight, Lean body mass (LBM), Total fat (TF), Body fat percentage (Fat %), Body mass index (BMI). The research uses B.I.A. to measure body fat percentage (Fat %), weight and BMI to evaluate bodu composition.
2. Blood Biochemical Value
Including Total cholesterol (T-chol), Triglyceride (TG) and impaired fasting glucose (GLU) in plasma.
3. Total cholesterol (T-chol)
Cholesterol is a kind of lipid in body, divided into ester type (to combine with fatty acid) and free type (to separate from fatty acid), to be generally called “Total Cholesterol”. Normal values should be between 120 and 220mg/dl.
4. Triglyceride (TG)
Triglyceride is a kind of fat in body. The unconsumed calories will be transformed into subcutaneous fat deposited in body. Most of the subcutaneous fat is Triglyceride. The normal value for Triglyceride is between 50 and 140mg/dl.
5. Glucose (GLU)
The sugar will be absorbed in intestines, transformed into glucose and then transported into the blood. The glucose in blood is called blood sugar. The normal value should be between 70 and 100mg/dl.
6. Body Activity
Any activity generated by bones and muscles and can exert effects on actual increase of resting energy consumption (Bouchard & Shephard, 1994)
7. Nutrition Education
