Careers
Undergraduates are given
strong encouragement to
use the Careers Service as
often as they need from
the start of their degree.
Although some jobs are only open to graduates who have studied
a particular subject – after all, we would be worried if our GP had
graduated in philosophy or if the car we were travelling in had
been designed by a history graduate – a degree from UCL in
whatever subject can lead to a very broad range of careers.

International Students An Introduction to UCL
Students from 136 countries are currently
studying here, and they are welcomed for the
different perspective and diversity they bring to
teaching and learning at UCL.
Our aim is to ensure that international students
benefit from, and succeed on, their degree
programmes. International students are
therefore expected to have a similar standard
of qualification to UK students on entry. The
entry qualifications quoted on the departmental
pages (pages 24 to 165) are in terms of GCE A
levels and the International Baccalaureate.
Although a number of international students
offer these qualifications, UCL will accept
certain overseas qualifications recognised as
equivalent, such as the Singapore-Cambridge
Advanced level, the Hong Kong Advanced
level, the STPM (Malaysia), the German Abitur
and the French Baccalauréat, all at appropriate
levels. A fuller list is given on page 170, and
further information is available at
www.ucl.ac.uk/international by following
Country Information links. If you are still
unsure about your qualifications, you can
contact the relevant Faculty Office.
International students interested in degrees
in Science and Engineering whose
qualifications do not include A levels, the
International Baccalaureate or equivalent,
may apply for the one-year University
Preparatory Certificate which will prepare
them for entry to UCL degree programmes.
Further details may be found on page 169.
In addition, students who have not been
educated in English will need to demonstrate
an adequate level of English proficiency before
being admitted. UCL’s preferred English
language test is IELTS, but we will also accept
TOEFL. More details about acceptable
International Students
London remains a popular destination for international students
and at UCL 7,063 of our students, representing 37% of the total
student body, are from countries outside the UK.
Amokeye Adede is a third-year Chemistry
student from Nigeria. Amokeye is the recipient
of a UCL scholarship. She writes:
As one of the world's leading universities and in
one of the most exciting cities in the world,
UCL is a great place to study. For this reason,
and with a 5* rated Chemistry department,
UCL was the obvious choice.
As a prospective international student the
thought of living and studying in another
country is most probably a daunting one, but it
is a good experience that I feel has many
advantages. As well as being a great place to
study, UCL has a number of clubs and societies,
ranging from sport to music and including
cultural societies. These provide the opportunity
