ity of its teaching and research. It has the
strength in depth which, in this country, can
be matched only by Oxford and Cambridge.
At UCL you will be taught by people who are
actively engaged in making advances in their
subject, be that in the sciences, engineering
and medicine or the arts, humanities and
social sciences. We are therefore looking for
students who will be stimulated by this
environment and are keen to participate in
this joint venture of learning and discovery.

Selection of Students
We therefore seek students who have a
commitment to their chosen discipline, who
are open-minded and possess a questioning
attitude to knowledge, and who are
challenging (and fun) to teach.
All applicants to UCL must apply through the
Universities and Colleges Admissions Service
(UCAS), described in more detail in the How
to Apply section on page 168.
The application is forwarded by UCAS to UCL
where it is checked to ensure that specific
subject requirements have been or will be met
(e.g. a GCE A level in Chemistry or equivalent is
a requirement for Biochemistry). The application
is then carefully considered by the relevant
departmental Admissions Tutor on the basis of
the personal statement, the referee’s report and
available and predicted examination results.
Admissions Tutors are trying to assess qualities
such as academic potential, motivation for
studying the degree and communication skills.
UCL’s general policy is to interview, wherever
practicable, all UK-based applicants who are
being actively considered for a place. Under
certain circumstances, a minority of candidates
may be offered a place without interview
(although even these applicants are
encouraged to visit UCL before making their
decision), or may be given an offer conditional
upon attending a compulsory open day.
Students resident overseas or those who would
have difficult journeys are normally exempted
from an interview or compulsory open day.
The form of the interview day varies between
academic departments, but normally consists of
a talk about the subject and UCL, a tour of the
campus and a chance to talk with current
undergraduates, as well as the formal interview.
The nature of the interview also varies: some will
be subject-oriented whereas others will be more
concerned with motivation and communication
skills. The interview is not designed to ‘catch
applicants out’ but to give us a chance to meet
you and make a serious judgement on your
application. It is also a two-way process giving
you the chance to question us. At UCL we are
interested in admitting individuals and not
merely a collection of academic qualifications,
and we may use the interview to adapt our
standard offers depending on an applicant’s
strengths and aptitudes.
For some degrees, such as Fine Art and
Architecture, applicants are judged largely on
the portfolio of work they are asked to bring,
and their response to it. Other departments
may ask students to take certain tests and
exercises during the day: in English and
Philosophy, for example, you may be asked to
write a short essay. Part of the interview for
some modern language programmes such as
French, German and Spanish will be
