Teaching and Learning
At UCL, depending on the degree you are studying, you will learn through a combination of
lectures, tutorials, seminars, classes, laboratory work, and project work, and these are
described in more detail below. These approaches are designed to teach students to think
critically, analytically and creatively, to apply and adapt principles learned from one situation
to another, to express themselves clearly and concisely, to argue coherently and logically, and
to develop their own interests and aspirations as their knowledge of the subject grows.

Study Abroad An Introduction to UCL
UCL recognises that spending a period
abroad as part of a degree programme is
an intrinsically valuable experience. It provides
a framework in which students can develop
by being exposed to a different culture and
academic environment. Students also improve
their CVs and enhance their career prospects
as the skills they acquire are highly prized
by employers.
With more and more students looking to study
abroad as part of their degree, UCL is actively
developing opportunities to ensure that its
students can benefit from this type of
experience. There are almost 100
undergraduate degree programmes at UCL
which incorporate study abroad as an integral
part of the course. There are also opportunities
to study abroad as an option within many
degree programmes. Currently around 20% of
UCL’s undergraduates spend a period abroad
as part of their degree programme.
UCL’s exchange partners, which total in
excess of 250 institutions, include: the
California Institute of Technology (CALTECH);
Columbia University, New York; the University
of Pennsylvania; the University of Western
Australia; Melbourne University; the National
University of Singapore; the University of Hong
Kong; the Chinese University of Hong Kong;
Tokyo University; Osaka University; Scuola
Normale Superiore di Pisa; Universite de Paris-
Sorbonne; Humboldt Universität zu Berlin;
Universiteit van Amsterdam; the State
University Moscow; and the Universidad de
Barcelona, to name but a few.
Students who take part in exchanges pay no
fees to the host institution. Currently, UK/EU
students who study abroad for a full year on
the Socrates-Erasmus programme pay no fees
to UCL either and are also eligible for a
mobility grant funded by the European
Commission. In addition, UCL has introduced
a Study Abroad Bursaries scheme to assist
students with additional expenses associated
with studying abroad.
