an essay recalling their study abroadexperiences. Jude writes:
I was certain I wanted to spend my year abroadin Berlin, as I had spent an eventful summer
there in 2002. I was intrigued by this city for itsvitality and cultural diversity, which is counterbalancedby darker reminders of German history.
I was enrolled in the History of Art Departmentbut also attended lectures in the Modern
German Literature and Art Departments. The
Erasmus programme allowed me to reawakenmy interest for History of Art which I had put
aside while studying in London. Theprogramme also offered language courses, which
proved very entertaining as a large part wasspent trying to straighten out culturalstereotypes – such as the classic ‘tea-at-four’ jibe.
In such an international environment youquickly learn to respect other cultures. The yearin Berlin gave me the critical distance to stepback and consider my options after my degree. Many students do not have this opportunity.Without doubt it has been the most formativeyear of my life.

Careers An Introduction to UCL
The occupations of recent UCL graduates areextremely diverse. English graduate
destinations include press officer and
accountant; psychology graduate destinations
have ranged from residential care to trainee
solicitor; mathematicians have become
headhunters (in the urban jungle sense!) and
advertising executives; and biochemists have
become publishers and librarians.
Approximately 30% of new UCL graduates go
on to further study before embarking on their
chosen career. Many decide to undertake a
taught Master’s programme or research for a
PhD. Others carry out vocational training such
as teacher training or law.
Whether students choose to get a job,
undertake further study or indeed have a gap
year, the Careers Service will support them by
offering information, advice and guidance. In
fact undergraduates are given strong
encouragement to use the Careers Service as
often as they need from the start of their
degree, and not wait until their final year
before making plans for their future career.
This ensures that they are fully aware of their
options and that they will have developed the
required employability skills.
Throughout the academic year, the
Careers Service runs an extensive range
of employer-led events, including skills
workshops, presentations, forums and
careers fairs. The Careers Service has
strong links with a large number of graduate
employers across the sectors.
The following facilities and services are offered
to all undergraduates:
Personal consultations with a Careers
Adviser, including CV checking and
practice interviews
A comprehensive website, including e-mail
careers advice and e-mail vacancy
notification system
An extensive careers information
library including:
occupational information with job
descriptions and free materials on job
hunting techniques, CV and application
writing, interview skills and aptitude tests
graduate study directories covering most
graduate qualifications in the UK and
also some overseas universities, plus
advice on funding graduate study
an on-line vacancy library holding details
of job opportunities in London, the rest
of the UK and overseas, including fulltime
