Chapter One Spontaneous Separation from the WhiteCommunity

1.1 Enlightenment from Individualistic Mother

A Sport of Nature is almost narrated around the growth and changes of theprotagonist Hillela from an external point of view, the unreliable third person. Thisnarrative distance makes it implausible for readers to conceive of this novel as anautobiographical writing. Though Gordimer holds that the first novel The Lying Daysis her authentic autobiographical novel in public, the high identity similarity betweenthe protagonist and Nadine Gordimer herself could add much colour of anautobiographical piece to this novel.André Brink, the Afrikaans writer in SouthAfrica, would tend to place this novel in the analytical framework of picaresque novels andassert that “the deeper meanings of the autobiographical convention in the picaresquenovel reside, not simply in the use of the first person singular, but in the invention of aself” (Brink 270). Additionally, “The invention of an “I” --- even when it is called“she” --- is also predominant in A Sport of Nature” (ibid). So it is not improper toillustrate that Gordimer applies much of her own experience to the characterisation ofthe protagonist in A Sport of Nature. Gordimer is born in a Jewish immigrant familyin South Africa where her mother Hannah Myers sources from British Jewish sectionwhile her father Isidore Gordimer from Latvia. Similar to Gertrude Coppard andWalter Morel in Sons and Lovers, Hannah is an elegant woman with a culturedpersonality and so ambitious for the philanthropy by helping the blacks in SouthAfrica; while Isidore originates from the lower class as a watchmaker and later as ajeweller privileged in apartheid society. “Although they are Jewish, Nadine’s parentslacked any cultural and temperamental compatibility” (Robert 41). In this situation,Gordimer is much influenced and enlightened in her childhood by her mother andlater was considered and “detained” as another “Paul Morel” with intensivemotherhood. Not merely does Gordimer become engrossed in reading but is eager topursue independence and freedom. Her character is totally indicated in her words that“I was a bolter, from Kindergarten age, but unlike most small children rapidlyaccustoming their soft, round selves to the sharp angles of desks and discipline, I wenton running away from school, year after year” (Gordimer 113).

1.2Awakening of Racial Consciousness

Looking back to the history of South Africa, one can discover a documentary ofboth the nationalist struggle of the blacks and of the formation of white racist ideology. The very combination of racist ideology with racist regime forces the implantation ofthe racist consciousness as a sort of shared social character into the mind of most ofSouth African whites. At the beginning of the colonial period, the Boers, the firstgroup of colonizers from the Netherlands, categorized the whites and non-whites withrecourse to Calvinism church. “Those Boer farmers just classified the whites andnon-whites into Christians and pagans in a hierarchical way without reference toethnic colours” (Zheng Jiaxin 47). Moreover, they believed that perso论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
