I interviewed one of my best foreign friends for this assignment. His name is Francisco Jose Gamboa Valderrama, and he is a PHD student in UNL. Francisco comes from Venezuela. He shared his perspective about gender and race with me, and he also talked about his experiences about gender and race issues.
Francisco told me that he comes from a community in which he believes there is no big difference between different genders and different races. Firstly, we talked about gender, and his impression of gender is that women and men act the almost the same in his country. In his society, women and men have the same chance to get a job in a company or government. If there really is a difference, it might be the different positions men and women take in the same workplace. For example, he used to work as a quality control supervisor in a manufacturing factory which produces refractory bricks for indusial ovens. In this workplace, everyone believes that an engineer should be man and a secretory should be woman. His boss doesn’t want to women work in the manufacturing area, because he thinks that the environment is too abominable for a woman to work with.  As a result, woman can only get a job in administration department, but not in manufacture department. However, in Francisco’s mind women should also be qualified to work in the manufacture area, because sometimes women are more careful than men while they are controlling the quality, and they are better at making precise decisions. Francisco also told me that sometime women even work harder than men, and women have to take care of the house after working. Another difference he could tell about gender is that men have more freedom in his country. For instance, if he has a campaign day, he could take part in it easily as long as his parents have the phone number of organizer. In contrast, parents have more controls on women. Normally his parents don’t allow his sisters to attend this kind of outside activities. 
For race issue, he told me that he didn’t see any racial discrimination in his country, where contains 67% Mestizo, 21%White, 1% Amerindian and 9% African and Asian. The fact he told me really amazed me by contrasting with American society. He said that it is easy to say black people with white people, Mestizo people with Asian people. They don’t care the color at all. One good example happened in his family can support this opinion very well. His mother, a white people, married his father who is a mestizo, and his younger brother who is white fell in love with a black girl. In his country, they will get marry with someone who they love but not necessarily has the same color with them. There is also one interesting thing happened in his family. He never cares about how people think the color difference between him and his brother, because color is just color and nothing more than that. Sometimes he also calls his brother “My Catire”, and they are good brothers forever.
