For most people, the answer would be no; we put our trust in the supplier to give us good food. In the world of drug users they have this same mindset. This mindset in today's world is very dangerous. One drug that is sometimes hidden in products is Benzylpiperazine, better known as BZP. BZP is used by people to add an extra boost to their mood, or the effects of other drugs. It wasn't always this way, how could something as harmless as an anti-parasitic medicine cause so much trouble?

BZP is composed of C11H16N2 (figure 1), and was originally created to be used as a potential antihelminthic(anti-parasitic) agent for use in farm animals. Over time of it being tested they chose to release it to the public. It was soon discovered that BZP has side effects and was largely abandoned as a worm treatment. The next time that it came up in literature, was in the 1970's, when it was investigated as a potential antidepressant medicine. They had put it under extensive testing; however, they soon came to the same results as with the animal use. They had found out that it needed to be rejected when the research they did showed that BZP had amphetamine-like effects and was liable to abuse.

During the early 1990's, the DEA(Drug Enforcement Administration) saw an uprising of the drug being used recreationally in California. The DEA immediately launched an investigation. It was discovered that BZP was being used as an adulterant (adding a hidden substance to a consumable product/poison) in illicit(illegal) drugs. Since at this time BZP hadn't gained the recognition with law makers, and was not yet illegal, the drug gained popularity with late-night party goers as a replacement for illegal drugs. The drug could be taken orally, or intravenously.

The drug effects are very similar to an amphetamine. It attacks the serotonin reputake transporter, which is the cell like membrane that contains the nerve cells inside of a cell. Serotonin is the chemical in our bodies that regulates things like mood, appetite, sleep, muscle contraction, and cognitive functions such as memory and learning.[1] The effects cause your muscles to relax and to have a floating type feeling while high. 50mg of BZP must be ingested before a high can be achieved, but no more than 200mg can be in the system, or it may have fatal effects.

The drug has an interesting side-effect that most drugs don't posses. The drug actually creates effects very similar to a hangover.
