摘要:The relationship between language and culture is very complicated. English teachers should consider the position and the effect of culture- introduction in the English teaching deeply, and then do some relative adjustments in preparing the courses.
Ⅰ.Introduction
With the accelerating pace of globalization, and the expending of mass media in the world, English has been taken as the international language in a lot of countries. And inter-disciplinary people who master English are urgently needed. Chinese students learn English under a EFL(English as a foreign language)environment, therefore, culture-introduction become very important in college English teaching.
Every culture in each country has distinct characteristics that made it different from one another. The differences are in
history, geography, climate, religion, economy and so on. Language is much more than a symbol and rule system that allows us to communicate with other people. It is not only the content of culture, but also the carrier and instrument. So it is impossible to separate our use of language from our culture. It can be said that learning a second language is learning a second culture. In this way, a successful foreign language teaching is not the simple language discipline and application, but the high level of cultural exchange drawing the assistance from language. However, there is a phenomena nowadays, no matter how we deal with tests or going abroad, everything covers national culture. It brings a fundamental effect on
Education and the English teaching. It has long been recognized that language is an essential and important part of a given culture and that the impact of culture upon a given language is something indispensable. If, however, language is seen as social practice, culture becomes the very core of language teaching.
Ⅱ.The Necessity of Culture-Introduction
Language is a part of culture. Cultures are diverse, so are languages. The differences in cultural backgrounds are the factors that prevent college students’ English learning .So integrating culture teaching with language teaching is a must in the college English class.
2.1 Close Relationship between Language and Culture
Language plays a significant role in developing, elaborating and transmitting the culture, it enables us to store meanings and experience to facilitate communication. Language and culture are so closely related that the correct understanding of the relationship between the two is vital in cross-cultural communication.
A great deal of cross-cultural misunderstanding occurs when the “meanings” of words in two languages are considered to be the same, but in fact it reflects different cultural patterns. Some are humorous, when a Turkish visitor went to the U.S., he refused to eat a hot dog because it was against his belief to eat dog meat. Some are much more serious, when a French couple take a trip to China, taking their pet poodle into a restaurant and requested some dog food. The dog was cooked and taken to their table on a plate. It’s just a black humor. It can be summarized that the relationship between culture and language as the following: language is a vital component of culture. It is the primary medium for transmitting much of culture. Without language, culture would be impossible.
People learn their native language are learning their own culture; learning a second language also involves learning a second culture.
