sp;in  this  part,  the  relevant  literature  of  learning  strategies  will  be reviewed. The studies of learning strategies can be traced back to the middle of 1970s, but until recently the definition of  learning  strategies  is  still  controversial.  Different  researchers  have offered different  definitions.  In  this  paper, four relatively representative six definitions of learning strategies will be presented.  Rubin  (1975) defined learning strategy as the way of “input” of the learner, i.e., how to process, store, and retrieve  what  they  learn  in  the  brain.  Stern  (1983)  defined  learning  strategies  as  the  general  approaches  learners used  in  their  learning  process.  Rod  Ellis  (1985)  defined  learning  strategy  as  the  mental  or  behavioral  activity related  to  some  specific  stages  in  the  overall  process  of  language  acquisition  or  language  use.  Oxford  (1986) defined learning strategy as “steps taken by learners to facilitate the acquisition, retrieval or use of information”. Wenstein(1986)  and  Mayer  defined  learning  strategies  as  the  specific  behaviors  and  thoughts  that  learners  have when they are learning and these behaviors and thoughts can influence learners’ encoding process.   O’  Malley  and  Chamot(1990)  defined  learning  strategies  as  the  strategies  learners  use  to  make  their  learning effective.  According  to  the  definitions,  we  can  find  that  there  is  a  major  conflicting  point:  are  learning  strategies general  or  specific?  Despite  the  difference,  all  the  researchers  believe  that  learning  strategies  can  contribute  to effective learning.
