摘要:This research proposes to arrest attention from listening to the teaching of metaphor and cultivatingstudents’ metaphorical comprehension competence on listening. So the results of current research wouldstimulate more study of this filed in the future.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1The Background of the Study
In the unreal communicative environment, to master a language, the level of listening comprehensionplays a vital role. Sara Lundsteen has described the importance of listening: What we have written in a yearis equivalent to what we have spoken at a week; both of them can be compiled into a book. But only in aday what we have heard can be compiled into a book. Obviously, listening is used most frequently bypeople in all the language skills. Listening is a input type language skills, which is quite necessary tomaster in the four language learning skills, but the current situation is that Chinese English major studentsrelatively are poor at listening comprehension. During the listening process, students are passive receivers;even repeated listening seems to have little effect. In fact, the reason why it has little effect is that a largegroup of students confronted with real- time listening difficulties and they don’t know how to conquer thedifficulties.In recent years, foreign language teaching has been undergoing great reform. There has been extendedmore and more attention on students’ speaking and listening ability. To master a language is based on whatpeople hear and understand. A major part of foreign language study remains the lecture. Thus, listeningcomprehension is vital in the language teaching. In this critical moment, there should be a practical andeffective theory to advance the quality and efficiency of listening teaching, and contribute to the wholeforeign language teaching reform.

1.2 The Purpose of this Study
Language is a product of human cognition, the nature of which is metaphor. So Metaphor Theory isquite likely to create a new perspective to study language teaching. Cognitive linguistics provides a newidea on perception of metaphor, but also explores a new approach for teaching practice. In recent years,domestic researcher has extended more and more attention on the application of Metaphor Theory invocabulary teaching, writing and reading comprehension, but paid little attention on listeningcomprehension.This thesis is to give an introduction of Metaphor Theory and explore a complementary strategy forteaching foreign language listening efficiently; stimulate students’ interests and motivation in listeningcomprehension process; help them conquer their listening difficulties; so that they can achieve overallsuccess in the acquisition of listening and communicative skills. Through the analysis of current reallanguage listening teaching situation and the difficulties the students faced commonly, the researcher triesto find an effective way of applying Metaphor Theory in the real teaching environment so that the qualityof language listening comprehension can be improved. At the same time, this paper attempts to makemetaphor theory more effective on language teaching, but also expect to attract readers’ extensive thought.


1.3 The Significance of the Study
