With respect to school attendance, retention and achievement, Indigenous students perform poorer than non-Indigenous students across all levels. (SCRGSP 2007, pp.13-14) Further Indigenous students demonstrate lower post-school qualification, employment rates and labour force participation; all mentioned result in different socio-economic status, wellbeing and health of Indigenous students and non-Indigenous after they leaving school. (ABS 4704.0)
The education gap between Indigenous students and non-Indigenous students is a major concern. The above Figure 1 showed us the population profile of Indigenous students and non-indigenous students in Australian secondary school. (Zubrick et al. 2006) From the Figure 1 we could see when indigenous students entering a higher grade, students keep dropping in numbers. At all grades Indigenous students in number are less than non-Indigenous students. (SCRGSP Overview 2007, p.4)
How did the gap come about? First, the attitudes of Indigenous students’ parents account for the gap. Some of them do not want their children to get education totally different with their traditions. Most Indigenous family has their own hesitations; parents fear that when their children get more modern education they will lose their own identity and culture. They have “a huge hesitation” about the embrace of different cultures. (Koori Mail 482 p.3) Second, it is hard for Indigenous students to get recognitions by schools. It is a specific reason causing Indigenous students to leave school. In some schools it seems hard for them to cooperate and communicate with each other because their culture and history are not recognized. To get along well with Indigenous students, cultural knowledge is a must, either for teachers, or the non-Indigenous students. (Koori Mail 440 p.60)
From above, one of the effective ways to narrow the gap of education between Indigenous students and non-Indigenous students is to let them know the cultures of each other better. The parents should know how their children could be benefit from education, such as better fit for the future society or just get more job opportunities; and non-Indigenous people in schools and society should show more respect to the Indigenous cultures.

It’s a comprehensive survey conducted by Western Australian Aboriginal Child Health, regarding how to improve the educational experiences of Aboriginal children and young people. It provides an overview of the education outcomes of Indigenous students in Australia; it also points out how the gap in education impact on the Indigenous students, especially when they try to get better post-school qualification and employment opportunities.
