摘要:English cultural background in teaching reading, having sense to improve English cultural senses and to break cultural barriers, to improve sensitive of English countries’ cultures, and to train students’ ability of cross-cultural communication. Thus, only this can really improve the teaching quality of English reading comprehension.
I. Introduction
As an activity,reading is the need of individual development, which can be summed up as reading for survival, reading for learning and reading for pleasure.
“Process of reading is a complex psychological process.” a reading theory proposed by Goodman in 1967 by means of the psychological language viewpoint. When reading, we need to understand the surface structure of letter symbols, to grasp linguistic knowledge, such as words and sentences, etc., moreover to comprehend the conversion of deep semantic structure, as well as to process, analyze, associate and predict the information transmitted by the reading materials.
Today’s society, embodied by IT, science and technology progress with each passing day. For this reason, communications are more frequent between the countries all over the world. The economy and technology are internationalized. An international language is needed more and more urgently (Qian Rumin, 1997). English has become an international language that adapts to the need of new situations for such sorts of reasons as
history, culture, politics and economy, etc. Some investigations indicated that, “As of the middle of the 21st century, the position of English will not change in any case. No other language may replace its current international status. At present, about 85% of the writing publications and audio-visual publications are published in English. And the status of English will be more strengthened in the next 50 years. (Liu Runqing, 1996) Besides, in Internet, the important information channel, 90% of the websites are in English. And most computer software is programmed in English. English is also an important tool for opening to the outside world and communicating with all other countries. Studying and mastering English is one of the basic requirements for the citizens in the 21st century. English reading skills are playing a more and more important role in today’s social and human development. This shows that in the information society, if you could read English books, newspapers and magazines directly, you could get the necessary information, which has great significance in political, military, social, trade, economic, cultural, scientific and technological fields.
Generally speaking, the requirement to the English reading ability mainly includes three points as: firstly, the reading scope of knowledge should be large, the quantity of vocabulary should be sufficient and the fields involved in should be wide; secondly, the reading speed should adapt to that of information updating; thirdly, the understanding of reading should be accurate.
Modern people should have certain ability of reading comprehension. The ability of reading includes two primary factors: reading speed and understanding rate. The standards for reading ability are how fluent you read and how accurate you understand. Reading speed reflects how much you read while understanding rate reflects the quality you read. Both are the dialectical unifications.
Middle school students’ abilities of reading comprehension are inhibited by many factors in the process of studying English. Both of their knowledge structures and reading skills are in a developing period. Of course, it is an important period. During this period, teachers should do some trainings and directions to improve students’ reading skills. What the teachers’ have done will become a base for their future study.
