Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Key Concepts
In this chapter, the author will give the definitions of two key concepts so thatreaders can easily understand the content of this thesis. At the first place, thedefinitions of coercion given by many linguists are shown. Next, inertia coercion, asa specific linguistic phenomenon, which is the central research point of the thesis,will be introduced briefly.Construction Grammar (CG) claims that construction is the basic unit oflanguage and has its own complete meaning. And the meaning of sentence is theinteraction between constructional meaning and lexical meaning, that is, the wholemeaning of a sentence or a phrase depends on not only the meaning of its lexicalitems but also the way of combining those lexical items together. The interactionbetween constructional meaning and lexical meaning is built on the rock of twoprinciples: the Semantic Coherence Principle (the SCP) and the CorrespondencePrinciple (the CP). If the constructive meaning of a sentence is compatible with itslexical meaning, it is easy for readers to understand what they read. However, thereare many abnormal language phenomena in which the constructive meaning of asentence is not in line with its lexical meaning, that is, there is a mismatch betweenthe meaning of the words and the meaning which the construction expresses. In therecent 25 years, there are many notions which have been put forward to describe thislanguage phenomenon, such as type coercion (A?t-Kaci, 1984), type shifting (Parteeand Rooth, 1983), enriched composition (Jackenbdoff, 1997) and implicit conversion(Talmy, 1988) etc..

2.2 Previous Studies on Coercion and Inertia Coercion
After giving a brief introduction of the definition of coercion and inertiacoercion, in this section, we will summarize the previous studies on coercion andinertia coercion in the literature and the recent research trends on them.Construction Grammar generated on the base of Cognitive Semantics, beginningfrom 1975 and expanding like the wind in the 1980s. Lakoff, in his paper --Linguistic Gestalts which was an early version of Construction Grammar, argued thatthe meaning of the whole sentence or phrase was not the sum of the meaning of theparts of it. Therefore, he claimed that construction has its own meaning.There have been many scholars, such as Talmy (1978), Langacker (1987), Croft(1991), Goldberg (1995), Taylor (2002), Michaefis (2005), etc. having studied themechanism of coercion from different perspectives.Talmy (1978) put forth his own opinion about the phenomenon of “Shift” –meaning is shifted in position or it maybe has changed – in his essay of The Relationof Grammar to Cognition- a Synopsis. In 2000, he made some modification in hispaper and claimed that construction plays a critical role in cognition and one of itsimportant functions is to modulate and coerce the lexical meaning in a real context sothat the sentence we speak or write can be understood easily.Langacker (1987) had also done a research on coercion and took it as the processof accommodation.
