2.1 Theoretical foundation

In this section, the brain science theory, constructivism theory and schema theory will be introduced.

2.1.1 Brain science theory

Brain science is discovered by R.W. Sperry, a great American neuropsychologist, who notes the striking difference between the left and right sides of human brain. As is vividly shown in the picture below, the right brain is in charge of rhythm, music, images, imagination, daydreaming, color and dimension, while the left part is responsible for language, logic, analysis, number and etc. Besides, the modern brain science theory shows that the brain nerve is a network of neurons that emanate outward from the center, and the brain thinking also presents a kind of divergent image. Indeed, human memory and thinking are all carried out through a network system.

2.2 Research methodology

2.2.1 Research questions

This study aims to answer the three following questions: 

1. What are the current problems in English grammar revision class for students of grade three in senior high schools? 

2. What are the effects of mind map method on students’ English grammar revision grades? 

3. What are the effects of mind map method on students’ English grammar revision attitude and interest?

 2.2.2 Research subjects

125 students of grade three in senior high school were selected as the research subjects in the experiment from two classes, namely Class 13 and Class 15 of NO. 3 Senior High School in Le Ping City. The former with 63 students was randomly set to be the control class (CC), while the latter with 62 students as the experimental class (EC). These participants in two classes are taught by the same teacher who is experienced and knowledgeable with the same teaching material (all the grammar points in high school). In addition, there are six English lessons per week in both classes, among which one class is chosen for reviewing grammar knowledge in particular. Indeed, the only distinction between the two groups is that the experimental class adopted the Mind map method while the control class employed the traditional method. The basic information of the two classes is clearly shown in the table.
