本文是一篇英语语法论文,笔者认为英语语法教学是一个非常复杂的过程,涉及到学生、教师和教材等诸多因素。尽管有一些发现对教师的语法教学有帮助,但本研究仍有一些局限性需要指出。

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Research

How to teach grammar effectively has been one of the key topics discussed by English education experts and teachers at home and abroad. One of the focuses is whether grammar teaching should adopt implicit instruction or explicit instruction, which has attracted considerable attention. Explicit instruction and implicit instruction are two common methods in the practice of teaching grammar. Explicit instruction requires that teachers teach students grammatical knowledge systematically and sequentially. In classroom teaching, teachers do their best to present grammatical rules, give examples, and consciously ask students to practice target structures. Explicit instruction emphasizes the leading role of teachers in imparting knowledge. The main structures will be taught first and then combined with the specific language contexts of learning. Conversely, implicit instruction means that teachers do not directly teach the knowledge they are going to learn, but let students understand or summarize the knowledge points through a certain context or situation, emphasizing that students understand and learn by themselves in exploration.

The research about explicit and implicit instruction originated from the artificial grammar experiment conducted by American psychologist Reber (1976). He found in the experiment that students can also learn the grammatical rules contained in the experimental materials without effort and consciousness, so he first proposed the concept of implicit learning. Since then, scholars have carried out many studies on the topic of explicit and implicit teaching and learning. Among them, whether grammar should be learned through explicit rules in explanation or implicit acquisition in meaningful communication has become the focus of debate in the field of language teaching. Some scholars believe that explicit grammar teaching is the dominant teaching method in English teaching. 

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research

It can be seen that the research focus has shifted from whether to teach grammar to how to teach grammar. Based on the relevant research on explicit and implicit grammar teaching at home and abroad, this study adopts research methods such as classroom observation and questionnaire to explore the current situation of explicit and implicit instruction in junior high school. It is generally believed that explicit instruction and implicit instruction are all indispensable teaching methods in grammar teaching. The purpose of this study is to explore the current situation of explicit instruction and implicit instruction in grammar teaching, and to answer questions about the teachers’ perception of explicit instruction and implicit instruction and students’ attitudes towards explicit methods and implicit methods. 

The research on grammar teaching by means of explicit instruction and implicit instruction in China is based on foreign research and started late. This study aims to promote the development of explicit and implicit theories in China and provide implications for English teaching in junior high schools.
