the differences between the Chinese culture and the we stern culture.
(15) Women are the half of the sky.
妇女半边天。
“妇女能顶半边天” has been used for a long time, while the foreigners don’t understand the relationship between “women” and “the sky”. In English, it says women equal with men, and women can be able to do what men are able to.
2.3 Diction Errors and the Relevant Statistics
Diction refers to choose the most proper words to express one’s idea in writing. In broad sense, words can be classified into two parts: content words and function words.
2.3.1 Content Words
Content word is a type of word that has an independent, “dictionary” meaning. In English, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, numerals, verbs and adverbs belong to the content words. Nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs make up the largest part of the vocabulary, which are sometimes called open class words, since we can regularly add new words to these classes. The types of word-formation include compounding, derivation, conversion, abbreviation, blending, hybrids, etc. During the process of word-formation and word-choosing, learners often make errors. The following is a table of error statistics of content words which occurred in students’ compositions.
Table 4 Errors of Content Words
Type Frequency Percentage (%)
noun 103 46.82%
pronoun 29 13.18%
adjective 38 17.27%
numeral 7 3.18%
verb 35 15.91%
adverb 8 3.64%
Total 220 100%
From the table 4, noun errors cover 46.82% of the content errors in these 30 compositions. Noun errors include the unnecessary twins, inappropriate nouns, lacking “s/es” after the countable plural nouns, and adding “s” after the uncountable nouns. Even one student doesn’t know the single form of “children” is “child”. Next to noun errors are adjective errors, for many students are apt to mix up the parts of speech.
2.3.2 Function Words
Function word is a type of word whose role is largely or wholly to express a grammatical relationship, with no concrete meaning. The function word can not serve as a component in sentences independently. Function words include article, preposition, conjunction and interjection. The following are the relevant statistics of the errors of the function words.
Table 5 Errors of Function Words
Type Frequency Percentage (%)
article 20 26.67%
preposition 47 62.67%
conjunction 8 10.67%
interjection 0 0%
Total 75 100%
The article errors, such as, a European style, a old saying, a orient pearl, a optimistic boy, a introverted character, and so on. Many learners don’t know how to use a definite article and an indefinite one.
The errors of prepositions cover 62.67% of the function errors. Prepositions refer to “in, on, at, to, from, of, etc.” Learners seem confused by these prepositions. For example,
在星期五——on Friday 在上午——in the morning 在晚上——at night
Many learners use “in” Friday, “on” the morning, “in” the night. Different prepositions collocating with the same verb may have different meanings. For example,
take som ebody in 允许某人寄宿家中;欺骗、蒙蔽或愚弄某人
take off 起飞;匆忙离去;产品等大受欢迎
take something off 除掉,脱下(衣物等);收回或撤消某物
take on something 呈现(某种性质,样子等)
take (something) over 控制,管理(国家,改变等)……
III Four Causes of Lexical Errors in Writing
There are many causes resulting in the lexical errors. This thesis attaches much importance to four aspects: interlingual negative transfer
