Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the
thesis
Conversion can be referred to a method of word-formation or a frequently used method in translation. In translation and interpretation, it is usually referred to the changes of lexical category or parts of the sentence from SL to TL, so as to make TL more precisely (Wang Lei, 2006). For the different grammatical structures of SL and TL, class shifts at the lexical level are inevitable. And in C-E and E-C translation, conversion from Chinese verbs to English nouns is applied a lot, since Chinese is an “active” language, while English is a “static” language (Bao Caixia,). In the past, a large number of studies on conversion have been conducted. However, most of those studies are relying on introspection and instinct. As corpus translation studies have being developed rapidly since Professor Mona Baker and her team published Corpus Linguistics and Translation Studies: Implications and Applications (Mona baker, 1993) in 1993. Many Chinese scholars also mentioned the strategies of conversion in their textbooks. For instance, Zhang Peiji suggests “ (In E-C translation) many English nouns derived from verbs and those nouns implying actions can be translated into Chinese verbs.”(Zhang Peiji, 1980) For its short
history, corpus studies in translation and interpretation remains to be improved. According to incomplete statistics, only ten corpora are widely used in the whole world (Zhang Wei, 2013). In China, the major corpora include CECIC, CEIPPC, PACCEL and CLEC. Data of the former two corpora are collecting from meetings and interpreted by professional interpreters. And the last one is composed of writings of English learners in different levels. Therefore, to explore the features of Chinese English majors’ interpretation, the author chooses to collect data from sub-corpus of PACCEL. Thus, through investigating V-N conversion in C-E interpretation, the author attempts to find out the features and errors of the English majors in using such conversion, the practical
strategy of V-N conversion and tries to throw some light on teaching methods.
