Chapter One Description of The Translation Task

1.1 The Translation Project

Machine translation is on surge nowadays and draws plenty of attention in the field. Whilethe post-editing work is yet to develop, the author decides to base her study on this subject.Focusing on the translation accuracy in post-editing, the author aims to find some practicalstrategies for solving problems of typical improper translations on the machine translation.Thiscalls for a relatively large corpus. With an aim to settle the typical problems related to accuracyfound in machine translation, this report will aid to improve the machine translation processesespecially the post-editing work for other translators. In this report, two books are chosen forthe research, which provides a number of cases in the aspect of translation accuracy. Though ofthe same genre, the two books are different in styles and themes. Since there are relatively fewstudies of post-editing on texts about Chinese history and culture, the research in this reportwill help to expand machine translation research in this field by offering some strategies tosolving four typical types of improper translations. Another reason for this choice is that thetwo books relate more or less to ancient Chinese history and culture which draws the attentionof both exports abroad and inland. The translation of such texts helps to reveal the importanceof Chinese culture in the global stage and to draw some inspiration from foreign exports’exploration of Chinese culture.

1.2 Text Selection

With the aim to spread Chinese traditional culture, the author keeps eyes on Englishhistorical literature on Chinese history when searching for an original text. When LiteratureCommunity in Early Imperial China emerged on the list, it caught the author’s attentionimmediately for its special insight in Chinese history. After first reading, the author wasattracted by Sanft’s unique idea of ancient Chinese history from a special perspective. Sincefew people would pay attention to the main idea of this book―soldiers in the northwest frontierand other inhabitants did have interaction with writing, the author believes it worth payingattention to when China is now trying to show more about ourselves to the world and hopesthat more people around the world could comprehend much more about Chinese culture.Besides, Literature Community in Early Imperial China is based on the excavated documentsand original materials to the maximum extent, which makes the content of the book much morereliable with accurate and precise arguments.The arguments in the book are relativelyobjectiveand pertinent, which is worth being considered when studying ancient Chinese history. Thetranslation of the book is therefore meaningful for Chinese native scholars and others withinterest to gain some inspiration from this book.
