Therefore, the interpreter needs toacquire the background knowledge of the project as quickly and comprehensively aspossible, otherwise the interpretation must be fragmented, and communicativeproblems between the parties will also arise. However, the interpreter had very limitedtime for preparation. Besides, the documents provided to the interpreter turned out tobe insufficient, so it was unlikely to be as professional as the speaker and listeners insuch a short time.

Another problem is that although the terms were mugged up before, theinterpreter still remained stuck when it came to the same terms during interpretation.Even that the interpreter had spent a lot of time on background information learningregarding the machinery field and benchmark for workshop contamination control, itwas still impossible for the interpreter to sort out those that have been read, let alonereview the terms and phrases marked and extracted before. In addition, the terms werehuge in quantity, strong in speciality and similar in their Chinese meanings, making itdifficult for the interpreter to memorize and find the equivalent expressions in Chinese.

2.2 Processing Capacity under On-site Pressure

Daniel Gile proposed his Effort Models to help interpreters understand the“difficulties (of interpreting) and select appropriate strategies and tactics” (Gile, 1992:191). The underlying basic ideas are mainly two: 1. “ interpretation requires some sortof mental ‘energy’that is only available in limited supply”; 2. interpretation “ takes upalmost all of this mental energy, and sometimes requires more than is available, atwhich times performance deteriorates” (Gile, 1995: 161).

It is a truism that consecutive interpretation is a stressful and demanding mentalactivity. The reason is attributable to many factors, including time pressure, thecapacity requirements for listening and analysis, short-term memory, output andcoordination. It is difficult to carry out the entire interpretation work by relying solelyon short-term memory in a high-intensity and high-stress environment, at this time,note-taking helps make up for lack of capacity in short-term memory, clarify thoughts, relieve stress, etc.

Yet set against these benefits are a bundle of problems. In this project, theinterpreter tried to walk the line between listening comprehension and note-taking buttoo often she was confused as to the desirable quantity of notes, the language in whichthey should be taken, whether it was preferable in the source language or in the targetlanguage, the use of symbols, etc.
