Chapter One Project Survey

1.1 Project Background and Significance

It is a great honor for the author to participate in the E-C translation project of thebook entitled Society without God. The writer of the book, Phil Zuckerman, is awell-known sociologist in the United States. He is also an associate professor of sociologyat Pitzer College and a visiting professor at the University of Aarhus in Denmark. Theoriginal English version of this book was published by New York University Press in 2008,and it was introduced into China in 2019 by Yilin Press, which is one of the mostinfluential brand publishing houses in China. This book, which consists of 9 chapters with227 pages, is mainly about the religious and social conditions in Denmark and Sweden. After receiving this translation project in January 2019, the author, together with otherproject members, spent six months completing it. After the translation of each chapter wascompleted, the author and another project member proofread and modified each other’stranslation. After the final proofreading and modification by her supervisor, the project wasfinally closed in June 2019 and submitted to Yilin Press for review. The author wasresponsible for the translation of Chapter 6 to Chapter 9 of the book and chose therepresentative Chapter 6 as the research material for this project report.

Denmark and Sweden are probably the least religious countries in the world, and mostof the Danes and Swedes are irreligious or religiously indifferent. The writer of the booklived in Scandinavia for 14 months, during which he observed as much of Danish societyas he could, studied and read as much of Scandinavian history and culture as he could, andtraveled around Denmark as much as he could. He also interviewed a large number ofScandinavian people, either randomly or formally. He spoke with people from all overDenmark and Sweden, of all ages, occupations and educational backgrounds, asking them about life in such a nonreligious society, as well as about their own religious belief or itsabsence. It was through these interviews that the author was able to get a deep sense of lifeof Danes and Swedes and had the opportunity to reflect upon and analyze the nature of lifein a society where belief in God is marginal. This book is thus a personal reflection andsociological analysis of what he found, experienced, and learned while living in one of theleast religious societies in the world.
