2.2 Previous Studies
This is a review part of previous research, which mainly introduces research on iconicity, research on advertising language with the help of linguistics and research on advertisements from the perspective of iconicity.
2.2.1 Studies on Iconicity
The conflict between arbitrariness and iconicity of linguistic symbols has always been a topic concerned by linguists. Since Saussure, the father of modern linguistics, put forward the theory of arbitrariness of linguistic signs, arbitrariness has always occupied a dominant position. However, with the development of language cognition, iconicity has gradually come into the public’s view as a force that cannot be ignored. Iconicity is first pointed out by Peirce, the founder of semiotics. Later, it has been widely concerned by linguists, and a lot of scholars have considered and discussed this issue. In general, research on this topic roughly includes the studies on the ontological characteristics of iconicity, studies on the representation of iconicity, and the application and practice of the iconicity theory (Yang & Mao, 2013).
Scholars’ research on the ontological characteristics of iconicity mainly focuses on the discussion of the dialectical relationship between arbitrariness and iconicity. The focus of their disputes can be summarized as the following three points: The first point of view holds that the position of arbitrariness is unshakable, and it always occupies the predominant position. Examples are like Guo Yukai (2001) pointed out the shortcomings of iconic causes from several aspects, Wang Dechun (2001) emphasized that there was no necessary essential connection between linguistic signs and their justifications and objects, Zhu Yongsheng (2002) as well as Zhang Yanfei and Liu Zhenqian (2015) believed iconicity was a complement to but not a substitute for arbitrariness. In contrast to the first view, the second point of view suggests that iconicity has its own advantages and is more reasonable than arbitrariness. The representative scholar is Professor Wang Yin, who illustrated the rationality of iconicity by demonstrating the theoretical basis of arbitrariness (Wang, 2003).
