In terms of paper tools, theEnglish-Chinese Dictionary edited by Lu Gusun and New Century Chinese-EnglishDictionary edited by Du Ruiqing are also of great significance in the process of translation.

2.2 Translation Process

Translation procedures of this project can be described as follows.

After analyzing the content and difficulty of the translation task, the translator plans tocomplete the translation of chapter 3 and chapter 4 within 20 days, and the actual translationrate is based on the complexity and difficulty of the source text.

First of all, it is necessary to read the original text in a general way. This can help thetranslator quickly understand the theme of the text and grasp the main idea of it. During thisreading process, the translator is required to look up unfamiliar words in dictionaries, markterminologies and complex sentences to make full preparation for the translation. SinceContrastive Rhetoric is an academic monograph, there are plenty of terminologies aboutlinguistics involved and they all have specific translation. Thus, the translator should carefullyconsider their context and characteristics, rather than just adopting literal translation totranslate those words. Through consulting reference books and academic essays, searchingelectronic dictionaries as well as combining context, the translation of those terminologies isfinally determined.

Besides, the differences in grammar, language form and structure between Chinese andEnglish require the translator to flexibly adjust translation approaches in the translation. Inthis translation practice, the translator mainly adopts amplification, division and part ofspeech conversion at the lexical level to resolve the contradiction between two languages inthe process of conversion. In this way, the translated text could become more fluent and coulebe better accepted by target readers.
