o leave school, home and never goes to another school. He pretends to be deaf and dumb. He does not want to talk to others. Actually, the relationship between Holden and the school education is the miniature of that between Holden and the adult world. He totally can’t adapt to the situation dominated by the adult world and refuses to accept any norms.

2. 2. 2 Conflicts with the family
The family is vitally important in laying the groundwork for individuals to get their reviews. The family should be the beat sanctuary for the young generation. But Holden’s family is not such a place and his parents ignore their obligations. Holden describes, “My parents would have two hemorrhages apiece if I told anything pretty personal about them.”(Salinger 275) He is unhappy because he can not get his cherished spiritual values: honesty, innocence and love. His parents, the representatives of the older generation whose views are formed by the Great Generation and the Second World War, are indifferent to and uncaring of his life; instead, they send him to the expensive private school in order to make him able to buy the “gaddam Cadillac”(Salinger217) in the future.
In this novel, Holden’s father doesn’t appear at all and his mother only appears with a voice through the wall. His father is a successful lawyer but he never talks with his son. He has to fly to California even on the Christmas Evening, and he is generally absent from his children’s lives. The father’s only connection with Holden is to punish him. Whenever Holden does something rebellious, Phoebe will say to him, “Father will kill you”.(出处?)

Although in this novel, we do not see the real contact between Holden and his mother, we can guess the relationship between them from her contact with Phoebe. As Holden repeatedly notes, his mother is incapable of affection, for she never goes over from Allie’s death. One day his mother has already sensed the smell of cigarette in Phoebe’s room, but she doesn’t trace the reason why Phoebe lights a cigarette. She just says: “I don’t like that, Phoebe. I don’t like that at all.” (Salinger 339) When Phoebe tells her that she smokes just because she can’t fall asleep, the mother only goes to her daughter’s room and says good night. She isn’t concerned about why Phoebe couldn’t sleep. Once the parents even go to the party in Norwalk, and leave the little girl home alone. Holden’s mother is insensitive and irresponsible. But in Holden’s mind, he really wants his parents’ help. “Mother darling, give me your hand. Why won’t you give me your hand?” (Salinger 337)

When he sneaks back home, he is very scared and nervous, but he still wants help and love from his mother. And he says to Phoebe, “I really hope they find” (Salinger 337) that he has been expelled from the school and then give him some guidance and help. Holden especially wants to get love from his parents, but his parents don’t care about Holden’s feeling at all.

Holden’s elder brother D.B used to be a promising writer when he was at home, and he wrote the terrific book of stories, The Secret Goldfish, so Holden admires his brother very much. “My favorite author is my brother D.B” (Salinger 217). However, D.B goes to Hollywood later, and writes for Hollywood to earn money. He becomes very successful and “he’s got a lot of dough” (Salinger 217). Holden doesn’t know why D.B quits his论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
