real. But these adjectives are not enough to explain the complexity of recurring stereotyped roles. Only after Herzog do critics describe ‘characteristics’; Ramona and Madeleine force them to do so. But it is time for someone to write an entire essay on all the women.” (ibid)

1.4 Critical Approaches to Female Image in Saul Bellow

Saul Bellow is undoubtedly one of the best novelists in contemporary American literature. The famous literary critic, Frank Kermode, once said of Bellow: 'he is so good that anybody can see it with half an eye' (Bradbury, 1982:11), and Norman Mailer, Bellow's literary rival, remarked: 'he has the warmest imagination, I think, of any writer in my generation' (1966:127). In a survey conducted in the U.S. universities, Raymond Mazurek reports that, most of the teachers of American literature who took part in that survey were of the view that Bellow is the most significant, as well as the most taught, writer in contemporary American fiction. The status and significance he enjoys in the realm of contemporary American literature is responsible for the daunting amount of criticism his works have received over the years (Quayum, 2004:1). One can be simply awed by the fact that 'the increasing bulk of scholarship on Saul Bellow has begun to approach the proportions of a minor industry' (Kulsharestha, 1978:15).

Ambling through the warehouse of Bellow-criticism, one finds that Bellow has been studied in significantly different ways at home and abroad. 'He has been described as a modernist, a post-modernist, a Schopenhauerian, a Reichian, a Steinerian, an existentialist, a post-existentialist, a romantic, an 'urban romantic,' an naturalist, a social realist and/or a Dreisarian realist...'a Jewish American novelist'' (Quayum, 2004:2). However, studies from the perspective of feminine just occupy a small proportion.

The critical perspectives on Saul Bellow and his characterization of female are very diverse. Some feminist critics say that Bellow has failed to deal adequately with 'femininity'. As one of the earliest critics who objects to Bellow's women representation, Leslie Fiedler attacks Bellow for failing to do justice to women by saying that 'the whole of Bellow's works is singularly lacking in real or vivid female characters; where women are introduced, they appear as nympholeptic fantasies' (1972:363). Jo Brans maintains that 'the women always are filtered, or falsified, through the minds of the heroes' (1994:158). Further, we get an impression that Bellow is more interested in illustrating societal attitude towards women rather than painting their character. However, Pradhan in her new book offers a different view. She argues that 'Bellow's vision of the woman is truthful and realistic. [...] Some of the women are the mental creations of the protagonists and some women have got real life and blood of their own' (2006:115).

As for Bellow's attitude towards women, there is a common charge that Bellow is a misogynist, and his attitude towards women is 'masochistic and chauvinistic'(Wesserman, 1997:xii). Some scholars find this accusation unfair. It is true that Bellow's novels may show frequent cases of divorces, marital conflicts, cases of adultery and betrayal in love. In personal life the novelist passes thro论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
