ugh as many as four divorces and they are likely to affect his vision of the woman to a certain extent. However, his outlook is universal and not parochial. His canvas of woman-portrait admits a variety of women with a spirit of toleration (Pradhan, 2006:116). With the help of his imagination, the novelist can transcend his personal experience and present a more or less objective picture of woman in his work.

The references to the 'type' of women in Bellow's novels are not new; however, only several critics have made their contribution to identify particular types. Malin identifies three types: the career women (Iva in Dangling Man), the pure housewife (Mary in The Victim), the wise old woman (Grandma Lausch in The Adventures of Augie March) (1967:201). However, there are some shortcomings in his definition. Take Iva and Mary for example. Malin classified them as career women. Iva does have an occupation, but she does it only for financial necessity instead of any desire on her part to have a career. As for Mary, there is no indication that she has a job at all. In fact, she is always helping her mother in The Victim.

Another critic who categorizes the women in Bellow's novels is Victoria Sullivan. She identifies two basic types: the destructive ones who victimize the hero, and the nurturers who tend to be the hero's victims (1975:189). But she discusses the women in only three novels and focuses exclusively on sexual conflict, making no attempt to be comprehensive or to follow through all the implications of these types.

InChina, the latest and most original research of Bellow's female images is accomplished by Liu Wensong. In his book, he studies the power relations between women and men in Bellow's fiction according to Michel Foucault's analytic of power. He analyses five female roles under three kinds of power relations: the intellectual, the economic and the emotional (2006:16). Due to his emphasis on micro-power relationship, his book suggests two kinds of power that women can exert on men: productive and repressive.

2. Three Types of Female Images in Saul Bellow's Novels

2.1 The Maternal Woman

The significance of maternal characters in Saul Bellow's novel is a fruitful but neglected area of Bellow criticism. Yet the necessity for such an investigation is apparent from the conflicting statements that are made regarding the role of the family in Bellow's fiction. Irving Malin has suggested that 'The family is at the heart of Bellow's fiction, it is the holy center of values' (1967:152). Yet Malin himself notes the inadequacy with which Bellow characterizes women, and he ultimately fails to demonstrate the values that derive from the maternal element of the holy center of value. Maxwell Geismar, on the other hand, observes a 'shifting, ambiguous parental pattern at the base of Bellow's work: which he claims is somewhat artificial and even false' (Geismar, 1967:280). Geismar notes that in Bellow's novels one or both of the hero's parents are typically absent, and he further detects the hero's attempt to re-create a 'lost' or 'imaginary family' (ibid:256).

Any attempt to determine the role of the family in Bellow's work must go beyond registering
