Chapter 2. literature review

2.1  Previous  translation  studies  from  the  perspective  of  the  image constructio

2.1.1 Domestic studies

Domestic studies in translation related to the construction of images can be divided into two stages, namely, the early stage and the past ten years. At the early stage, which is the period before 2009, few systematic studies or researches on the construction of images  through  translation  can  be  found  in  the  current  document  database.  Huang Zhonglian (2000) published a paper with the title of A Research on Reconstruction of Translation,  in  which  he  stated  his  thoughts  about  the  inevitability  of  the  text deformation during translation process. Han Ziman (2005) also discusses about the unavoidable deformation which finally leads to a translated text mixed with different literary  forms.  What’s  more,  Tan  Zaixi  (2006)  has  collected  and  analyzed  all  the previous similes about translation in the history of China and western countries, which provides us with more information to have a deeper understanding about the nature of translation and the image of the translator. In addition, Feng Wenkun (2009) has also made a study on the imaginability of translation. 

All the studies mentioned above make us realize that the significance of translation to the history of human kind as well as people’s viewpoints towards translation without focusing on the construction of images. However, in all those studies, the issue whether the translation can have impact on images of the text, the author and even the nation encoded within  the characters  and scenes  in  the novel towards readers  hasn’t  been involved.

2.2 A brief introduction of Happy Dreams and previous studies on it

2.2.1 A brief introduction of Gaoxing

Gaoxing  is  a  full-length  novel  published  in  2007  by  the  People’s  Literature Publishing House in China and written by Jia Pingwa, one of the typical Chinese writers focusing  on  the  peasants’  life  in  Shaanxi.  Jia  Pingwa’s  works  are  filled  with  local characteristics, including slangs, customs and other special culture-loaded items. In this case, Gaoxing can be one of his representative works showing not only the real life of lower-class  people  but  also  the  local  conditions  and  customs  of  the  countryside  in Shaanxi.
