Findings

In this thesis, a study is conducted on the images of the author, the book as well as China constructed via the translation of Happy Dreams and its paratexts. The study adopts  a  descriptive  approach  and  refers  to  the  theories  of  Medio-translatology, Imagology of Comparative Literature and paratext theory of Gerard Genette. Generally speaking, the study consists of literature review, theoretical framework for the study, relevant information about the reception of Happy Dreams among foreign readers to figure out its popularity, and the attitudes and feedbacks of the book from authoritative foreign journals and media as well as public readers. Further analyses of the images of the author, the book as well as China based on those feedbacks are given.

Firstly, through literature review about the previous studies on image construction and the translation of Happy Dreams both at home and abroad, it can be concluded that we have already obtained some progress in the translation of foreign literature into Chinese from the perspective of image construction. However, it still remains to work out the translation and reception of Chinese literature in foreign languages as well as the impact of translated literature on the construction of images. Moreover, the previous studies on Happy Dreams mainly focus on the translation of the cultural elements, the reproduction of literary forms and the process of Nicky Harman’s translation. Therefore, it is a breakthrough for us to study how the translation of Happy Dreams influences English readers in a way as to help them construct the images of the author Jia Pingwa, the novel and even the images of the Chinese nation. Then the theoretical framework part gives a detailed introduction of the theory of Imagology of Comparative Literature as  well  as  the  intersection  between  the  Imagology  of  Comparative  Literature  and literary translation both in the textual and paratextual level so as to provide a theoretical basis for the study. Then the thesis seeks to figure out the reception of Happy Dreams in foreign countries which can serve as the basis for further analysis on the construction of  images.  It  can  be  inferred  that  Happy  Dreams  has  achieved  a  quite  favorable performance in the online sales and aroused great discussion and many reviews from both public readers, authoritative journals and influential media in the English world.
