1.1 Introduction to Doris Lessing and her works

Doris Lessing has created a large number of works throughout her life with differentthemes. But it is not difficult to find that many of her novels describe the stories ofmarginalized people. Doris Lessing reveals more social reality problems through the stories ofmarginalized people in The Fifth Child and Ben, in the World.

1.1.1 Introduction to Doris Lessing

Doris Lessing (1919 — 2013) is a prolific and changeable British female writer. She isconsidered to be one of the most outstanding writers in Britain in the 20th century. During the50-year career, Lessing has created several works in the form of novels, short stories, poems, essays, plays and so on. The themes of the works include ethnic conflicts, gender relations,US-Soviet hegemony, atomic war, environmental pollution, scientific crisis, youth violence, the rights of the old man and other pressing social issues. “Lessing’ s creative thought is notconfined to tradition, won a number of world-class literature awards, and won the Nobel Prizefor Literature in 2007” (Feng 2014). Lessing is also the oldest female Nobel Prize winner todate. In the award speech, the Swedish Academy of Arts called Lessing “that epicist of thefemale experience, who with skepticism, fire and visionary power has subjected a dividedcivilization to scrutiny.” The representative works of Doris Lessing are The Golden Notebook(1962) and The Grass is Singing (1950).

Lessing was born in a family of colonial officials in Iran in 1919 and both her parentswere British. When Lessing was five years old, the family moved to Rhodesia (nowZimbabwe) due to his father’s yearning for pastoral life. In Lessing’s autobiography, we cansee that Lessing’s childhood was not happy, and the only pleasure for her was to play with hisbrother in nature. Lessing read a lot to escape from reality, so the 19th century novel masterssuch as Dickens, Gibling, Stendar, Tolstoy, and Dostoevsky became the most importantspiritual partners in Lessing’s early difficult time. The literary works of Dickens and otherswere the earliest literary enlightenment for her. There were two marriages in Lessing’s life, but they all ended in divorce. In 1949, Lessing, who was disappointed with South African life, moved to the UK with her youngest son. She had moved many times because of her financialdifficulties.

1.2 Literature Review

Although the two novels, The Fifth Child and Ben, in the World, are not representativeworks of Doris Lessing, the themes and compact novel plots that explore the issues of socialreality still attract many critics who analyses the two works from different angles.

1.2.1 Studies Abroad

The Fifth Child is the first novel since Doris Lessing returned to realism. In an interviewwith the New York Times, Lessing said that the creation process of this novel was painful andpositioned the subject of the novel as a horror novel. The reaction of the novel among thereaders strengthened Lessing’s writing of its se论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
