CHAPTER THREE MR. SAMMLER’S ETHICALSELECTIONSON HOW TO REGAIN ETHICALORDER
3.1As an Outsider—Fleeing to the Moon
As an outsider in American society, Mr. Sammler had fully witnessed the loss ofethical order in American ethical environment of 1960s. From an outsider’s view,Sammler perceives that because lots of Americans, especially the younger generationare lost in the postwar American society and they choose to indulge themselves in sex, money and crime, regardless of traditional ethical morality and ethical order, that thewhole New York City has fallen into a state of moral decay. There is no positive, justsociety that is ruled by law and the ethical relationships between men and men, menand society and men and nature has undergone great changes. In the American society, being an outsider, Sammler has seen much more than those closely involved and hehas to “be strong enough not to be terrified by local effects of metamorphosis, to livewith disintegration, with crazy streets, filthy nightmares, monstrosities come to life, addicts, drunkards, and perverts celebrating their despair openly in midtown” (Bellow60).

Professor Nie holds the view that “ethical identity is the premise ofevaluating moral behavior and moral ethics, and it restricts the subject of moralbehavior”(264). The influence of Mr. Sammler’s multiple ethical identities on hisethical selections towards the way out for human survival is the main argument of thethesis.
By applying the Ethical Literary Criticism, the thesis analyzes the multipleethical identities of the protagonist, the ethical environment of the United States in the1960s, and the ethical selections made by the protagonist about the way out for humansurvival in response to the ethical environment of moral decay and lack of order. Indifferent periods of time and in different ethical environments, Mr. Sammler’s ethicalidentity changes.
