Norris gives spotlight on the degradation of male role as the novel is mainlyconcerned with the degradation of Jadwin finding delight in “torturing others”(Mukherjee 323). It can be noticed from the novel that affected by the capitalistmarketplace, Jadwin gradually loses his virtues such as compassion and kindness tobecome selfish and indifferent. What’s worse, he imposes individual domination andcontrol on his peers out of his sadistic lust.

Chapter Three Male Anxiety in the Overwork in MarketCompetition
3.1 Emotional Isolation Led by Game
By the close of the nineteenth century, the relationships between the familymembers in the new middle class family began to make a difference. In this era, thenew middle class family was positioned in the transitional stage from traditionalpatriarchal family to companionate family. The ideals of companionate family havebeen perceived as the intimate relationship between the couple. In this new type offamily, the husband and wife are both lovers and friends. The two share domesticresponsibilities jointly. Throughout history, the family pattern governed by men hasbeen the foundation of American society. In patriarchal families, the construction ofmasculinity is inextricably intertwined with relations between men and women.
Generally speaking, there were few steps for the new middle class men andwomen to take before their marriages during the late nineteenth and early twentiethcentury. Romantic love is thought to articulate the measure of the marriage, whichprovides a prospect of a bright future to young men and women. Another procedurethat numbers of new middle class men and women have to experience is courtship. For men, they have the option to pursue for a woman with which they fall in love. Inspite of this, they are also exposed to subjective and external factors, which may giverise to some impediments to male decisions in the courtship. Beyond these hindrances, men assert that they are quite raring to get married. Though women have the power toturn down the courtship, they are passive to choose a partner who is in conformitywith their intentions. Engagement offers young men and women opportunities tomake full preparations for their marriage. Prior to the marriage, it is a transitionalphase when men are expected to search for a residence and women need to makearrangements for specific details. The wedding ceremony is followed by engagement. The notion of marriage is integrated with the union of two individuals. For men, theyare largely defined by their marriages, in which way, their masculinity isdemonstrated.
