OneChapter One INTRODUCTION

1.1 Motivation of the Study

With the development of globalization, the demand for people who can mastermultiple languages is increasing. Learning a third language or even more languages hasbecome a common phenomenon in today’s society. In China, the phenomenon ofmultilingual learning is also widespread, and the number of multilingual learners islarge. Therefore, the research of third language acquisition (TLA) has increasinglyattracted the attention of linguists.

When people learn a new language, the languages they have already acquired willhave some impact on the target language. In other words, the third language isinfluenced by the first language and second language that learners have previouslyacquired. This linguistic phenomenon can be called language transfer (Odlin, 1989;Gass & Selinker, 2008).

In recent years with the increasing political and economic exchanges betweenChina and Russia, the demand for people who can speak Russian fluently is growing. InChina, there are more and more third language learners studying Russian. However,there are few studies on Russian acquisition.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study

1. Purpose of the study

Nowadays third language acquisition is a common phenomenon. In the process oflanguage learning, the language transfer is unavoidable. The language transfer occurs inphonetic, grammatical, semantic, pragmatic and other aspects. Recently the study ofphonetic transfer has attracted more and more researchers’ attention. However, thecurrent research on phonetic transfer is mainly qualitative study without data support.Moreover, previous studies have not combined Russian (L3) acquisition with thelanguage transfer at the phonetic level. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is tostudy Chinese (L1) and English (L2) transfer effects on Chinese learners’ Russian (L3)vowel acquisition by collecting, extracting and analyzing the phonetic data of Chinese,English, and Russian of Chinese third language learners.

2. Significance of the study

Although the research on third language acquisition in foreign countries is 20 yearsearlier than that in China, it is still in the initial stage. At present, there are few studiesthat have explored the transfer of all previously acquired languages to the targetlanguage. In addition, most of the subjects in the domestic research of the thirdlanguage acquisition are ethnic minorities, and there are very few experimental studieson Russian acquisition. Therefore, this study can promote the research of languagetransfer in the third language acquisition, provide explanations and data support for theresearch of phonetic transfer, and enrich the research of Russian acquisition.

Chapter Two LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Previous Studies on Third Language Acquisition

Third language acquisition (TLA) refers to learners learning one or morelanguages other than the first language and the second language that they have alreadyacquired (Fauser, 1995).
