From 1939 to 1944, he studied in Bedford School and later received a commissionin Royal Marines. In 1947, he was enrolled in Naval Short Course at Edinburgh University.Half year later, he studied in French in Oxford University and got BA. From 1950 to 1952, hetaught French in Greece and met his future wife, Elizabeth Christy, who married him in 1954.From 1954 to 1963, he taught English in London. In 1963, his first fiction The Collector waspublished and turned out to be a great success. From then on, Fowles became a full-timefictionist.
His other works included The Aristos in 1964, a non-fiction work, The Magus in 1965,based on his experience in Greece and is most studied, Poems in 1973, The Ebony Tower in1974, another non-fiction work, Shipwreck in 1975, Daniel Martin in 1977, Islands,non-fiction in 1978, The Tree, also non-fiction in 1979, The Enigma of Stonehenge, againnon-fiction in 1980, A Maggot in 1985 and Wormholes in 1998. Most of his works hada titlewith an initial letter M and he recognized that this was connected with his mystical thoughts.All his works were best sellers, but he had no intention to get this honor. He said that a writer who intended to attract readers and critics is the same as a prostitute and he looked down uponwriters who ran after fame. He said that he never took fame seriously or he would become thekind of people he disliked.He was famous for his abilities of telling stories, which were never repeated. Herecognized that he was a native narrator, but he encouraged critics to focus on themes ratherthan techniques of his works.

Thackeray, Thomas Hardy,and John Fowles in 1976.Domestic researches on The French Lieutenant Woman recent years fall into mainly fourcategories.Firstly, The French Lieutenant’s Woman is analyzed in term of postmodernism. It isanalyzed either from all aspects of Postmodernism, or from a key word of postmodernism.Obviously, the later analyses are more systematically. “The Implications and Pleasures ofParody” of Zhang Feng from Shandong Teacher’s University in 2002 analyzes The FrenchLieutenant’s Woman by parody. He explains all the main features of the fiction, including thematerials quoted in front of every chapter, the developments of narrative perspectives andthemes of this fiction.
